Jan-03-09  notyetagm: <whiskeyrebel: Naka-hater excuses: the lighting was bad, Magnus has a cold, Magnus is simply in bad form, Naka was lucky, it would never happen again, the KID is bad, Magnus ate a bad taco, Naka didn't really "win" Magnus lost, it will never happen again.>

LOL

Naka! Naka! Naka!

Jan-03-09  rogge: I agree Magnus lose too often against 2600+ opposition :)
Jan-03-09  minasina: Hey, why my first comment is cleaned off?
Jan-03-09  thebribri8: What is the exact time control for this tournament?
Jan-04-09  malthrope: <thebribri8: What is the exact time control for this tournament?>

Here you go! ;)

Time control: 25 min +5 sec/move.

Tournament format: A preliminary double-rounded tournament is followed by a bronze final and a final, in all eight rounds, plus if necessary sudden death blitz games.

Peligroso Patzer: I have not been following this tournament live so far, but I was planning to do so today. What time (US EST) do the games start?

BTW, since Svidler-Carlsen is one of today's pairings, for any one who is not familiar with it, here is a link to a game from an exhibition match played in Sept. 2006 in which Svidler won with a brilliant sacrificial attack:

Svidler vs Carlsen, 2006

Jan-04-09  whiskeyrebel: Play should begin at 7:20 est
Jan-04-09  whiskeyrebel: Lots of relay errors yesterday. Plan for chaos.

  Peligroso Patzer: Thank you, <whiskeyrebel>.

And, right on cue, the moves are starting to come in.

Jan-04-09  whiskeyrebel: I hope Naka has steered clear of the wicked, but innocent looking psychedelic lefsa.

Peligroso Patzer: And now I notice that Carlsen has white today against Svidler. But the game linked in my earlier post is still worth playing through if any one is not already familiar with it.
Jan-04-09  malthrope: <whiskeyrebel> -- I had to Google "Lefsa" ~lol~ Now I'm hungry again! Thanks Whiskey! :^)
Jan-04-09  malthrope: Oh, I should also add (since there is no <CG.com> tourney link yet) that the 6 game Rapids match between 'Ivanchuk-Leko' for round #3 has just started as well... ;)

Here is the direct game 'live' link (it's also included in my Profile): http://ivanchukleko2009.com/en/ches...

Jan-04-09  whiskeyrebel: Another Naka-out.
Jan-04-09  malthrope: Yep! And, Magnus drinks the coveted juice with a victory smile! ;)
Jan-04-09  Strongest Force: Thx for all the great info, Malthrope. You are a great guy to have around. Now that Carlsen and Nak are tied for first, do they play the showdown game right away?

Stonehenge: Lie took a risk with 16.b4, safer was Bh6.

As I understand the format, there is one more preliminary round (Nakamura vs. Carlsen and Svidler vs. Lie) to be played today. The bronze and gold finals (two games each) will be played on Monday.

Jan-04-09  rogge: And now, will 3 guys end up with 4 points each?
Jan-04-09  malthrope: <Strongest Force: [...] Now that Carlsen and Nak are tied for first, do they play the showdown game right away?>

Strongest Force> -- Thanks for the compliment! :)

Round #6 (today Jan 4th) still yet to be played! ;)

Pairings:

Petr Svidler-Kjetil A. Lie
Hikaru Nakamura-Magnus Carlsen

Should be starting very shortly. Fasten your <CG.com> safety belts... It's gonna be one hell of a ride (Naka-Carlsen) is next! :^)

Jan-04-09  rogge: <Carlsen - 4½, Naka - 4½ >

No, 3½ each.

Jan-04-09  malthrope: Oops [quick edit] ~lol~

Current scores (after Round #5) are:

Carlsen - 3½
Naka - 3½
Svidler - 3
Lie - 0

:)

Jan-04-09  Atking: And it could be 3 players with 4 points at the end of the day.
Jan-04-09  malthrope: Yeah it was just a double typo <rogge> :)

The important this is...

'Naka-Carlsen'

is next! ;)

Jan-04-09  rogge: Time for REVENGE :)
