 | | Penguincw: Happy Boxing Day. It's midnight, and I gotta get up early in the morning. I haven't solved a Monday puzzle (or any POTD for that matter) in a while, so hoping I still retain some puzzle solving ability. I came up with the solution of 35...Rd4+ 36.Qxd4 Ne6+. Being up the exchange and a pawn should be enough to win for black. And Happy Belated Christmas to all.

 | | Phony Benoni: Winning the queen is easy enough: 35. .Rd4+ 36.Qxd4 Ne6+. And it looks even better than that, since White won't be able to win a knight afterward: 37.Ke4 Rxg4+
37.Ke3 Re1+ 38.Be2 Rxe2+ 39.Kxf3 Nxd4+ |
Dec-26-17 | | NBZ: The two knights triumph! A nice game by Geller well past his prime. At first Kg3 looks like a blunder, allowing the combination in the game, but the position was already hopeless with Rh8+ looming. Earlier Geller had played the nice and very patient 32. ... g6 and 33. ... Kg7, setting up these ideas, whereas patzer me would have probably rushed in with 32. ... Rdd1. |
Dec-26-17 | | NBZ: <Phony Benoni> 37. Ke3 Re1+ 38. Kd2 lets White get away with it. |
Dec-26-17 | | SpamIAm: <PhonyBenoni>- in your second line white can play 38.Kd2, no? |
Dec-26-17 | | SpamIAm: <NBZ> just beat me to it... |
Dec-26-17 | | pkkandel: <PB> After 37...Re1+ white responds with 38.Kd2 |
Dec-26-17 | | zb2cr: Okay, Black plays 35. ... Rd4+. White must take with the Queen, 36. Qxd4. Well, 36. Ke3, Rxc4 is possible but clearly fatuous. Black is then up by a full Rook. But after White captures on d4 with the Queen, he's set up for a Knight fork 36. ... Ne6+; 37. Ke3, Nxd4; 38. Kxd4, Rxg4+ and Black will be up by the exchange and 1 P. |
Dec-26-17 | | stst: 35..............Rd4+
36.QxR (forced, else K moves ==> 37.RxQ)
...... Ne6+ forks K & Q
37.K moves, NxQ
Rest easy for Happy Holidays!! |
Dec-26-17 | | lost in space: 35...Rd4! and it is over.
Mainz line is 36. Qxd4 Ne6 37. Ke3 Nxd4 38. Kxd4 Rxg4+ and at the final end (Pf3 will fall after 38. Ke3) Black is up a pawn and a quality. |
Dec-26-17 | | Sniffles: Ironic. I was just studying a poison rook of Fischer. Quite a bit more subtle than this one though. |
Dec-26-17 | | Patriot: I agree it's winning and I would play this line as black, but as white I would need to see more proof. |

 | | FSR: <Phony Benoni> After 35...Rd4+ 36.Qxd4 Ne6+ 37.Ke3, your suggestion 37...Re1+ would be a blunder in light of 38.Kd2. |
Dec-26-17 | | agb2002: Black has two rooks, a knight and a pawn for the queen and a bishop. Black win decisive material with 35... Rd4+ 36.Qxd4 (36... Ke3 37.Rxc4 + - [r+n+p vs B]) 36... Ne6+ 37.Ke3 (37.Ke4 Rxg4+) 37... Nxd4 (37... Re1+ 38.Kd2) 38.Kxd4 Rxg4+ 39.Ke3 f5 40.Kxf3 Kf6 - + [r+p vs B]. |
Dec-26-17 | | morfishine: <35...Rd4+> and White wins ***** |
Dec-26-17 | | Mayankk: Rd4+ is easy enough to spot.
The question is if White could have had a better game had he not decided to exchange off his rooks for the Queen. With the two rooks gone, rest of the game seems quite forcing for Black... |
Dec-26-17 | | patzer2: An easy Knight Fork combination with 35...Rd4+ 36. Qxd4 Ne6+ solves today's Tuesday puzzle. White's decisive mistake was 27. e5? allowing 27...Nxe5 -+ (-5.08 @ 29 ply, Stockfish 8). Instead, 27. f3 Ne5 Qe2 ∓ (-0.85 @ 32 ply, Stockfish 8) gives White a fighting chance. Early in the game, instead of chasing the Bishop with 10. g4, our Opening Explorer indicates White has had more success by developing with 10. b3 as in White's win in V Laznicka vs J Duda, 2014. |
Dec-26-17 | | Cheapo by the Dozen: Queen vs. pieces positions are inherently unstable in terms of material. So yes, winning modest additional material and simplifying at the same time is a worthy puzzle-solving win. |
Dec-26-17 | | BOSTER: Geller was the great tactician. So
combo'd begin in move 29... |
Dec-26-17 | | jdc2: What The Patzer Saw: 35...Re8, threatening Nh3 mate, so 36. Be4 RxB+, not realizing the black king can take the pawn on f3 after the knight moves.... |
Dec-26-17 | | AlicesKnight: 35.... Rd4+ drags the Q one square closer to the K - for the N fork 36.... Ne6+ leaving Black the exchange up and more to come. |
Dec-26-17 | | FlashinthePan: The final combination was obvious. Much harder to see OTB was that exchanging the queen for the two rooks would force the win for Black. |
Jul-09-22 | | Messiah: Very nice and merciless finish by Geller, it's a pity he never made it to the World Champion throne. (feel free to ban me if this comment is an obvious and gross violation of any of the posting guidelines) |

 | | Retireborn: Geller had a good record against Botvinnik and would probably have beaten him in 1963. His friendship (or his deal?) with Petrosian let him down, perhaps. |
