  Honza Cervenka: If 26...Bg3+ 27.Ke2 Rh2+ 28.Kf3 Bh4, then 29.Rfc7 Nd2+ 30.Bxd2 Rxd2 (30...Bd8 31.Rf7 Rxd2 32.Nxe6 threatening 33.Ng7#) 31.Nxe6 Bf6 (covering g7) 32.Ke3 Rd6 33.Rc8+ Bd8 34.Rxd8+ Rxd8 35.Nxd8 Kxd8 36.Rb8+
Feb-10-04  Hinchliffe: Sneaky:- Thank you for bringing this game to my attention. A beautiful game as you rightly mention.
Feb-11-04  MrDon: If 27....Bd6 W can't follow 28 Rfe7+ without losing the Rook Bxe7. Or 27 Bxd6 forking both rooks Nxd6. 28. Rfe7+ eventually trades rooks and the game continues... What am I missing?
Feb-11-04  uglybird: If 27...Bd6 28.Bxd6 Nxd6 29.Rbe7+ Kd8 30.Nc6+ Kc8 31.Rc7#
Jun-28-04  Dionyseus: Honza, in that line, Black should play 28...Rf2+, it seems to offer the best defense. Play continues 29.Kxg3 Rxf7 30.Rb8+ Kd7 31.Rxh8 Ne3 32.Nb3 e5 (32...Nxc2 33.Bd2 h5 33.Ra8) 33.Ra8 Rf4 34.Nc5+ Kc7 35.c3 +1.75 Fritz 7 14 plies per move
Jun-19-05  aw1988: Kasparov gets slammed.

WannaBe: <Joseph21: ... his in a winning position> You do mean Topalov right?
Jan-13-06  THE pawn: This is Topalov's favorite game.

Sneaky: 18...Qxa1+ 19.Kf2 and now where does the Black queen go?
May-05-06  The Phantom: "The Boy Who Would be King" , the name says it all.
May-05-06  Summum Malum: I couldn't have played it better myself.. =D ..
May-05-06  Marco65: 28...Kf8 29.Nxe6+ Kg8 30.Rg7+ Bxg7 31.Rxg7# is easy, but it took me some time to see 28...Kd8 29.Nc6+ Kc8 30.Na7+ Kd8 31.Rbd7#. Nice knight trip!
May-05-06  dakgootje: Couldnt it be that Kasparov underestimated Topalov as Topa wasnt far as good as hes now, and thus Kasparov maybe didnt think as deep about his moves then he would've done nowadays... just a thought ;-)
May-05-06  Philidor: <dakgootje> Plausible, but I still think he should've seen it coming. After all, it's Garry "perhaps the greatest chessplayer hitherto" Kasparov we're talking about, isn't it?
May-05-06  Manic: Actually, Fritz shows Kasparov winning. for most of the game until the last 6 moves. Fritz reckons that 15...Bg7 was a mistake and that Garry should've just taken on b2 with his Queen
May-05-06  itz2000: I think if black would have O-O around move 18 he would have been saved.
May-05-06  Georgie Dubb: On the scoresheet I found in Fritz8 Database “The Monster With a Thousand Eyes” only resigned after 28. ... ♔d8 29.♘c6+. So who's right ? And how many eyes were closed ?
May-05-06  KingV93: Plenty of stuff going on here to remind me I don't know anything about chess.

<sneaky> Thank you for answering my question before I could even ask it.

<THE pawn> I'm sure it is, a great victory for a young Topalov over the giant.

May-05-06  Shubes82: yeah I think this my chess breaking point. i guess im about a 1900-1950 rated player, but this stuff is just above me right now. ah well, in time...
May-05-06  HoLySmOkE: Whatever we speak Topalov was 18 years old and Kasparov was at his best!
May-05-06  patzer2: <Manic> While Fritz may recommend 15...Qxg2, it may not be good for more than equality without winning chances. After 15... Qxb2 16. Rb1 Qa3 17. Nd5 Bg7 18. Bxd6 Qxa2 19. Rxb7 Nxd5 20. exd5 Bxd5 21. Bf3 Qa1+ 22. Kf2 Qd4+ 23. Qxd4 Bxd4+ 24. Kg2 Bxf3+ 25. Rxf3 Rd8 26. Ba3 Rd7 27. Rxd7 Kxd7 28. Rxf7+ = (0.06 @ 14 depth, Fritz 8), IMO Black can hold the draw but probably doesn't have much more.

Of course if Kasparov had been content to draw against a young Topalov, then 15...Qxg2 would not have been a bad choice. However, I suspect he was trying for more.
