Aug-02-11 | | Garech: Wow, GM Keene, it's a pleasure to enter into conversation with you - I was not expecting an answer from your good self! My name is Sean Godley, I'm a reasonably well-known youtube chess commentator. I looked at this game as research regarding the Modern Defence, which I am considering bringing into my opening repetoire. I think we have spoken before - I asked you about some analysis you may have done when my father (John Kilbracken) played Garry Kasparov in the nineties. I don't suppose you have that game in a database somewhere? The only record of it was lost a few years ago - would be great if you did. Also, I'd love to hear your thoughts on the Modern Defence in general - I like to play provocatively and so I think it would suit my style. What are the most aggressive setups that white can adopt, and is there any good reason to fear them? Nice to get to know you!

Aug-02-11 | | DrMAL: Very nice game. Seems to me with the pawn on f4, 5...d5 is strongest in this opening still. 11.Bd3 was slow, 11.d6 continues with some advantage for white (e.g., 11...exd6 12.Nd5! Qd8 13.f5! Re8 14.f6! Bf8 ). |

 | | An Englishman: Good Evening: Used Keene's 5...Qb6 to score my first victory of any kind over a master (a casual 5-minute blitz game). He out-rated me by 600 Elo points. Thanks, Mr. Keene! |

Dec-13-20 | | schnarre: ...Nicely handled Dr. Keene! Now I see why 3. f4 isn't seen that often. |
|
Dec-13-20 | | V Geriakov: Finally, after a cascade of terrible puns, comes a good one.
Great game, GM Keene, the counter in the spirit of Alekhine's defense was brilliantly done! I wouldn't have been brave enough to allow my opponent such a huge center. |
|
Dec-13-20 | | Messiah: Finally a pun that does not make me puke. Very well done! A several weeks ago I submitted a 'Julius Seizure', hopefully it gets eventually chosen, too. |

 | | MissScarlett: Reminds me of the story of a book review attributed to Winston Churchill, in which he appraised a work as 'good' and 'original' - where good, it wasn't original; where original, it wasn't good. See: L B Zapoleon vs Capablanca, 1913 |
|
Dec-13-20 | | Ironmanth: Great game, and a great pun (which I never comment on!). Y'all continue to stay safe out there. |
|
Dec-13-20 | | morfishine: Since I suspect there is some murkiness regarding the originality of this game title, but have nothing in hand regarding a direct reference, I defer to <FSR> to comment on its origins |

See: L B Zapoleon vs Capablanca, 1913> Thanks. I knew I'd seen the pun before. |

 | | FSR: <morfishine> As <MissScarlett> noted, the original of this pun was <PhonyBenoni>'s <Zapoleon Blown Apart>. L B Zapoleon vs Capablanca, 1913 |
|
Dec-13-20 | | morfishine: <FSR> Thanks for the refresher and clarification. Since the Capablanca game didn't look familiar to me, I poked around and found the one I was thinking of: Napoleon Bonaparte vs The Turk, 1809 This is the game where <Benzol> posted 'Blown apart' was a much better pun than 'torn apart' |

Dec-13-20 | | Cecco: Is the position we get after 29 Qxe3 Nxg2+ 30 Ke2 Nxe3 31 Kxe3 b5 32 Bxb5 considered an easy win for a GM? I'm just asking because for sure it wouldn't be for me (not GM). A simple affirmative answer is enough. |

|
Dec-13-20 | | spazzky: Caro Keene defense? |

 | | ray keene: Hope you all enjoy the game. I certainly did. |

Dec-13-20 | | morfishine: Thank you Dear Grandmaster <Keene>! |

 | | HeMateMe: I knew something was fishy when I saw the huge pawn outlay by white. GMs don't play that, it looks a little too ambitious. |
|
Dec-13-20 | | TheBish: While I don't take credit for this pun (I'm sure it existed long before this website was created), I do get credit for attaching it to a "Napoleon" game (didn't see any others using it, not aware of the "Zapoleon" game) that was also a quality game. When I saw this game, I couldn't resist. I was actually surprised that pun was available. Even though "Zapoleon" was first, it doesn't have the same ring to it! |

Dec-13-20
 | | OhioChessFan: <Bish> it's fine and I don't mind much a pun or similar idea being reused. |

Dec-15-20
 | | ray keene: Yes 29 Qxe3 Nxg2 + is an easy win for Black. |
|
Dec-16-20 | | carpovius: Should this game be called "Caro-Keene"? |
|

 | | moronovich: Lol ! <carpovius> |
