Mar-24-05 | | Autoreparaturwerkbau: You all just want to make fun of Darling, don't you? On his second move he just wanted to play the usual 2.Bg2 but instead of the bishop he lifted the f-pawn... So he of course had to play that unfortunate pawn. So his only options was to play 2.f3 or 2.f4 which are both mate in 1 - too bad for Darling i guess. Stop bugging the poor fella. |
Apr-01-05 | | aw1988: Happy April 1 everyone. This is the ultimate "Fool's Game"! |
Jun-09-05 | | woodenbishop: I thought Fool's Mate was a joke novelty, but I guess it can actually happen. |
Jul-05-05 | | THE pawn: Wow, impressive play by black...no blunders. |
Aug-08-05 | | OneBadDog: Shouldn't this game be listed under Odd Lie ? |
Aug-08-05 | | jamesmaskell: Obviously theres a reason...helpmate appears the best one. A nice bit of fun for the records. Very sporting if a helpmate is used as long as its honestly meant. I know it cheats us fans out of exciting chess but then they provide the excitement not us. |

 | | offramp: <[Event "NWC April"]> is a clue. Was it played on April 1st? |
Oct-07-05 | | AlexanderMorphy: why does this database contain such horrible games??? They might as well put up some of our games! |
Oct-08-05 | | AlexanderMorphy: Funny enough this is Darlings only game in the database...what a fool! |
Nov-26-05 | | Chopin: I think Richard Wood redeemed himself after this pathetic loss. R Wood vs G Enger, 1993 |
Nov-30-05 | | morphyvsfischer: Oh Darling, that what wonderful! |
Nov-30-05 | | RookFile: A lot of games are jokes. When you
research them, there's a story behind them. I don't believe that this game
reflects Darling's true ability, any
more than this is a real chess game,
ending in stalemate:

Dec-04-05 | | chesscrazy: Okay... how many people have fallen for this trap? |
Dec-24-05 | | GannonKnight: If I see a chess board set up in a store, I set it up so that it's on the Fool's mate final position. :) |
Dec-31-05 | | syracrophy: This is one of those unforgettable "inmortal miniatures" |

Jan-03-06
 | | Richard Taylor: The moves arent completely illogical
1) you play g4 to attack toward the King
2) You see your opponent play what looks like a passive or even a weak move. 3) You think that if you play 2 f4 you can then bring your knight out 4) f4 covers some centre sqaures.
So this could happen 1. g4 e6 2. f4 Be7 3. Nf3 d5 4. Bg2 Nf6 5. g5 Ne4 6. Bg2 0-0 7. d3 Nd6 8. 0-0 c5 9.b3 and White is clearly winning. (lol) But the opening moves are not completely illogical perhaps the player if he was strong meant to play 1. f4 first ... if a beginner - some kind of reasoning as above.
[Looks as though it was cooked up as above - but there undoubtedly beginners who get into this for reasons similar as I have said..] |
Jan-03-06 | | Karpova: at least we do know now the name of this opening: Grob Opening: General |
Jan-03-06 | | whiskeyrebel: I still say there's no way this was a legit game. It's amazing that it's here in this data base...must be an April fools style joke from Northwest chess mag. Maybe one day Lance Darling will pop up out of obscurity and enlighten us...or better yet a NWC editor from back then. Bob Karch? Rusty Miller? |
Jan-03-06 | | Karpova: there might be someone hating darling who provided that game to <chessgames.com>. |
Jan-03-06 | | lentil: umm... <chopin> Wood WON this game |
Jan-03-06 | | szunzein: It's awfull to do something like that to someone called Darling |
Jan-03-06 | | szunzein: pas drĂ´le |
