 | | sorokahdeen: Sooo.... glad I wasn't playing black in that game. So glad. |
|
Apr-27-12 | | gofer: Black has no checks available, which makes this puzzle
significantly easier! The second factor is that black
has a check that pins the black knight. This would be
my best candidate to look at...
<30 Qd6+ ...>
30 ... Re7 31 Rxe7
30 ... Kg8 31 Rxf7
<30 ... Kg7>
<31 Rxf7+ ...>
31 ... Kg8 32 Rxf6+
31 ... Nxf7 32 Qxf4
31 ... Kh6 32 Rxf6+
<31 ... Kg6>
<32 Rg1+ Kh5>
<33 Rxf6 ...>
Okay black can resign. The queen is lost. The alternative
is mate!
<33 ... Qxe3>
<34 Rf5+ Kh4>
<35 Qf6+ Kh3>
<36 Rg3+ Kxh2>
<37 Qh4#>
Time to check...

That was significantly easier than yesterday! |

Apr-27-12 | | viking78: Can't see it all through but I'm sure it starts with 30.Qd6+ Kg7 (looks better then Kg8) 31.Rxf7+ Kg6 32.Rg1+ Kh5 32.Rxf6 should be enough for , maybe mate is close but I can't figure it out. |

Apr-27-12 | | agb2002: White is two pawns down.
Black threatens 30... Nxd7.
The black queen is defenseless. This suggests 30.Qd6+, starting an attack against the black king while disabling the knight by pinning it: A) 30... Kg8 31.Bxf7+ (or 31.Rg1+ Bg4 (31... Ng6 32.Qxf4) 32.Rxg4+, etc.) 31... Kg7 32.Bxe8+ wins a rook at least. B) 30... Kg7 31.Rxf7+ Kg6 (31... Kg8 or 31... Kh6 32.Rxf6+ wins the queen) 32.Rg1+ Kh5 33.Rxf6 Qxe3 (33... Apr-27-12 | | viking78: Arghh, so close to the full point today! Went to the Crafty link 7cman gave above and was surprised Black give up the Queen in 2 moves! It gives indeed a longer life to Black's defense, but after about 25 moves I ended up with 3 Queens, Rook and Bishop vs 2 Rooks and 2 Pawns, for a nice Rook checkmate which was a funny ending position where only you can go vs computers cause a real player gives up way before it. In conclusion, glad I found 30.Qd6+, followed bye 31.Rxf7 and 32.Rg1+, but I think today's puzzle was a bit easier that usual Fridays. Have a great weekend chess-friends! |

 | | scormus: Although most of the W moves are quite natural choices, it's quite a lot of them to have to find, as well as the best defense by B. I got about most of the way but not enough to consider I solved it fully. Most difficult move to find IMO is 33 Rxf6, and of course realising ... Qxe3 is toothless. A very nice sequence by Vishy in this rapid play. |
|
Apr-27-12 | | KingV93: Happily surprised to see ♕d6+ is correct, didn't look much after ♖xf7 as it seems to turn into an inescapable position. This one will boost the confidence! |
|
Apr-27-12 | | sevenseaman: Hi <scormus> Welcome back; been missing.
Two important points in your brief verdict. <33. Rxf6+ most difficult move to find> and <Vishy did all this in rapid>. I guess you meant <31. Rxf7+> as <33. Rxf6> is plain enough. (If it is really <33. Rf6> it is because Vishy saw that Wely only has the <toothless 33...Qxe3>) It looks like me most days, you too miss the long distance cover provided by a somnolent B. And yes, isn't it amazing that Vishy found this neat sequence in <rapid>. I think he sees in 10 secs what I do in 10 minutes. This happened in 'Amber Rapid' 8 years ago. I recall he topped the 'Rapid' section there quite a few times. Hope he continues to retain the same reflexes. My wild guess is you didn't give this one much more than 5 minutes. Right? |
|
Apr-27-12 | | Elo: ChessGames is great. Anand is great.
This is the worst 'puzzle' they have ever posted.
Mundane and straightforward from beginning to end.
At what point did someone say "This position would make a good puzzle" ? |

Apr-27-12 | | James D Flynn: Candidates Qd6+, Rg1:
30.Qd6+ Kg8 31.Rxg1+ Bg4 32.Rxg4+ with overwhelming material advantage and continuing attack. Or 30…..Kg7 31.Rxf7+ Kg6(if Kh6 32.Rxf6+ wins the Black Q) 32.Rg1+ Kh5 33.Rxf6 Qxe3 34.Rf5+ Kh4 35.Qf6+ Kh3 36.Rg3+ Kxh2 37.Qh4#
30.Rg1 Nxd7 31.Qxd7 Re7 32.Qc8+Re8 33.Qxe7+ Kxe7 34.Nd5+ Kd6 35.Nxf4 Re8 and White is a piece up for 2 pawns but the e pawn can advance to e2 with support from R and B and possibly the f pawn. The endgame is therefore unclear. |

Apr-27-12 | | Memethecat: 30Qd6+ pushes K onto open g file & pins N to Q,
30...Kg7 (30...Kg8 31Rg1+ Bxg4 32Rxg4+ Qxg4 33Nxg4 Nxg4 white is up a R with a killer position) 31Rxf7+ Kg6 (31...Kh6 32Rxf6+ Qxf6 33Qxf6+ wins Q for R) 32Rg1+ Kh5 (32...Bg4 Rxg4+ wins Q)
33Rxf6 <reached the limit here of what I can compute in my head, so out comes the board> 33...Qxd3 (its only safe sq) 34Rf5+ Kh4 35Qf6+ Kh3 36Rg3+ Kxh2 37Qh4# The final mvs are all forced, but there's no way would I of been able to finish without the board, I was having trouble visualizing the position. All the obvious mvs are the correct ones, the difficulty in todays puzzle is working out blacks numerous responses. |

 | | scormus: <sevenseaman> thanks for your kind words! I had my hands full recently with a couple of online games. Actually I did mean 33 Rxf6. I felt 30 ... Kg7 was most likely, so then 31 Rxf7+ (the BN was pinned) would force the BK into the open on the g-file. What seemed hard to me, at least as I looked at the board on 30, was to play a non-check as the 4th in the sequence which gave up the WN. But yes, what would be difficult for me since it is beyond my calculation "comfort zone" would have been well within Vishy's range. Especially as B had nothing after 33 Rxf6. I think BK must have felt like Richard III at Bosworth Field, his horse too far away to be any help BTW, anyone know how strong 1450 is when converted to BCF grade? One of my opponents is that and he gave me a hell of a tough battle. How on earth can I think about beating an 1800 if I have so much trouble with someone <1500. And as for anyone >2000 .... |

Apr-27-12 | | CHESSTTCAMPS: Black is up two pawns, but white's pieces are more active and black's king more exposed. White has one good check available and it does at least two good things, so that has to be the primary candiddate. 30.Qd6+ pins the knight and drives the BK to the open file. The attack plays itself, with one black rook out of play: A) 30... Kg8? 31.Rg1+ Bg4 (Ng6 32.Qxf4) 32.Rxg4+ wins the BQ. B) 30... Kg7 31.Rxf7+ kg6 (Nxf7 32.Qxf4 or Kh6 32.Rxf6+ are quicker wins) 32.Nd5 (gainning a tempo for breakthrough at f6) and now: B.1) 32... Qh4 33.Rf6+ Kg5 34.Rg1+ Bg4 (Ng4 35.Qf4#) 35.Ne3 and the double threat of Rxg4+ and Rf5# wins. B.3) 32... Qxh2 33.Qxf6+ Kg4 (Kh5 34.Nf4+ Kg4 35.Be6+) 34.Ne3+ Kh5 (Kg3 35.Rxf3+!) 35.Rg7 Ng6 36.Bf7 1-0 Like yesterday,I might have missed something simpler. Time for review.... |
|
Apr-27-12 | | Patriot: Black is up a pawn.
Black threatens 30...Nxd7.
After about 5 minutes, I'm going to say 30.Qd6+ is the way to go. 30...Kg8 31.Rxf7 looks winning.
30...Kg7 31.Rxf7+ Kg6 32.Rg1+ - this has to be winning. 30...Re7 31.Rxe7 might be better than 31.Qxe7+, threatening 32.Rxf7+ and mate next. |
|
Apr-28-12 | | M.Hassan: <sevenseaman:It looks quite good today but <36. hxg4>??. How come. Looks you set up the board and did it erroneously. The P is on h2 not h3. Nevertheless you were on track till the slip.> Another warm thank to be sent to you.
Looks like that I "wished" that the pawn be on h3!!!. Anyways,after that error, I have worked out the continuation of the game to be as follows: 35............Ng4
36.Nxg4 Bxg4
37.h3 Rhg8
38.hxg4+ Rxg4
39.Qf5+ Kh6
40.Qxg4
And mate next move |
