Phony Benoni: Hmm. The pun is a bit forced, but I do belive we can over look that.

As for the game, it's basically a matter of Black learning that you don't draw Karpov by simplifying things.

Richard Taylor: From don't put "all your eggs in one basket" reversed and I presume his opponent is Basque. But what the pun means I still have no idea.

Karpov again demonstrates how (and why) he was at one stage the world's strongest player. But not in 2003!

Good game.

Domdaniel: Nice pun. And a nice Karpov win: he doesn't *seem* to do much, but he out-thinks his opponent at every turn.
Oct-27-13  YoungEd: I was surprised to see 14. ♗xc6. I don't understand its motivation; can someone please help?
Oct-28-13  Baura: PUN-ch line to an old joke: In the northeast region of Spain there was a small town with a movie theater. Each Saturday night was movie night and people would come from the town and surrounding region to watch the movie. The only problem was that there was only one door to the theater. Well unfortunately one night it caught fire and people were crushed to death in the stampede to get out the one door. The moral of this story is: don't put all your Basques in one exit.

Richard Taylor: <Baura> True story or your witty a la Dennis Norden and Frank Muir of "My Word"'s (50s radio show) where they made up stories based on old saying etc?

I think Karpov considered that in the position ensuing a N would be more dangerous to his plans than the B and he needed to us his own Ns. Although I expected he would play d5. He wasn't at his best when he played this game so maybe it wasn't the best plan.

Richard Taylor: If he wanted to play e4 and later pressure d6 then he had to deal with Ne5 so he probably felt he was safe enough on the K-side (where he does have some white square weaknesses)and he would find the ending easier to play without the N on c6.

But Karpov moved in mysterious ways!

Oct-28-13  kevin86: White is about to evict the blockader of the pawn.
Oct-28-13  YoungEd: Thanks, <Richard Taylor>!

Richard Taylor: <YoungEd> I can opine on these "strategical" things but when it comes to playing I can blunder with the best of them. It's rather depressing.

Mind you some positions it is nearly impossible to work out why GMs or computers play moves they do. Often in a game I have no idea of what plan to purse.

Still it's interesting to try to follow the masters and be able to enjoy their games and interesting plans or combinations.

I think this was a particularly confusing game.
