Mar-29-06 | | Fezzik: I just took a deep look at the position after 35...Ng5. If White doesn't play 36.c4, I am not sure that White wins at all. WOW! In fact, some natural moves end up losing for White. The variations are too numerous and convoluted to reproduce here, but I suggest plugging the position into your favorite chess engine (or find a friend) and playing it out. 36.c4!! is the real winner in this game! |

Mar-29-06 | | notyetagm: <Halldor: ... just hoped that the knight would be safe on d7> Many of the "I solved the problem in 2 seconds" kibitzers didn't even think about that. |

Mar-30-06 | | dakgootje: <36.c4!! is the real winner in this game!> Yes? whats wrong with 35. Nxd7 Ng5 36. Nb8 Nxe4 37. Nxa6 bxa6 38. Bxa6 then? quite an annoying little white pawn there isnt it? |
Mar-30-06 | | The17thPawn: <dakgootje> - Thats's pretty slick as well but I think Nd2 brings the knight over in time. The bishop can't come back to prevent Nb3 or its lost on C4 and the pawns advance is halted. Now I consider 39.b4 the next logical try. 39...Nb3 40.a5,c5 Now if 41.b4 than a5 goes or 41.bxc5,Nxc5 and the knight can die to stop the a-pawn. Then I looked at 41.c4 but that seems to go nowhere as well. Now I agree that the a-pawn is annoying and black will have to give up his Knight to stop it with correct play. Finally if white plays 39.Bd3 than 39...e4 is an eye opener! Three possible lines might continue 40.Bxe4,Nxe4 41.a5,Nc5 42.b4,Na4 which halts the pawns, or 40.Bc2,e3 41.f3,Nc4 42.b3,Ne5 43.Be4,Nd7 44.a5,Nb8 and the pawns stay put. last line runs 40.Bc2,e3 41.fxe3,fxe3 42.a5,Nc4 43.a6,Nb6 (44.a7,c5 puts the brakes on)44.b5,c5 45.bxc5,dxc5 and I can't see anything that looks decisive. Black ends up with a fighting position in the variations I examined and I cannot find a win for white. I'll plug this in to Fritz 9 and see where it goes. I enjoyed your analysis and would appreciate any feedback you are willing to offer. |

Mar-30-06 | | goldenbear: <RandomVisitor>Thanks for the 24th and 25th moves. I'm suprised the line I gave is only loosing by a pawn. Anyway, I like my line; Black simply plays as if he's winning, hoping White won't meet the threat head on. |
Mar-30-06 | | goldenbear: <RandomVisitor>Plus 30.Rad1 is a subtle move. The idea is if 30.exd5 then f4! is then good for Black. I guess that must be right or else the computer would have preferred it. |
Mar-30-06 | | Halldor: Thanks <notyetagm>, yes you are right. - Actually I don't mind being a bit slow, the point is that despite of that I get a lot of fun out of chess. |
Mar-31-06 | | dakgootje: <The17thPawn> Open for suggestions, but i tihnk blacks best line after 35. Nxd7 Ng5 36. Nb8 Nxe4 37. Nxa6 bxa6 38. Bxa6 is Nc5, i think white is much better after 38. Nd2 as Bb7 and white bishop both controls a6 and a8 as the a8-h1 diagonal and because of this, the black pawns cant do much anymore. Because of Nc5 the white bishop cant go to that powerful diagonal as soon as with nd2 because the knight defends b7. Instead of going to the diagonal white must also defend its pawn now, so it needs to play Bc5. Black has more choices to play now, but i dont really know its best option, but i tihnk Kf7 preparing Ke6\Ke7, d5, Kd6 and c6 forcing the bishop of its b5-square, but it probably is too slow. blocking the pawn with the knight is no good either certainly not 38. Bxa6 Nc5 39. Bb5 Nb3 40. Bc4 Na5 41. Bd5 where black is obviously totally lost. As moving the pawns wont do much good either for stopping whites pawn, i think Kg7 is best so far but the follows b4 and black has to move its knight again and the white a-pawn can go to a5 and a6 as both squares are now defended. So i dont know how black is going to hold its knight as this is the best line i see for black, and it probably still has to sac its knight in the end for the a-pawn... So far there are 2 options: 1: i oversaw something which wins/draws/loses less quick for black OR 2: I was right indeed with that Nxa6 is a winner also. |

Apr-05-06 | | The17thPawn: <dakgootje> - I consulted Uncle Fritz and he concurs with you but it takes a bit longer than you mentioned with best play. I have posted the relevant lines and a plausible continuation past 25 moves from your suggested ...Nc5. Congrats on your inspired plan it may even be a bit stronger than the winning line in the actual game.

After black takes the knight with 24....fxe3, what does that leave white with ? |

Jun-10-08 | | johnlspouge: <<ShadowRider> wrote: I don't get it...what does 24. dxe5 achieve ?? [snip] After black takes the knight with 24....fxe3, what does that leave white with ?> I was surprised that nobody commented on how Ne3 hung for a couple of moves, but the answer lies in the support of a positional move by a combination. If Black plays 23...fxe3, 23…fxe3 24.Qxf7+ Kh6 25.Ke2 (threatening 26.Rh1+ Kg4 27.Rg1#) 25…exf2 26.Rh1+ Kg4 27.Qxf2 (threatening 28.Rg1#)
and Black is cooked. The finish if Black plays 24...fxe3 is similar: 24…fxe3 24.Qf6+ Kh6 [or Kh7] 25.Ke2
(threatening 26.Rh1+ and mate soon, much as above)
Jun-10-08 | | johnlspouge: My first line is not quite right. Instead of 26.Rh1+ immediately, 27.Kxf2 Qh4+. After delaying with a few more checks, Black faces Rh1, winning the Q. Back to work ;>) |
