40.Qa7+ Kh6 41.Rf7 Qh8 42.h4 Re4 43.g3 Re2+ prolongs black's resistence and is weaker than the direct 40.a6 |

Don´t think so: 41.Ra3?? Qc1! 42.Qxd6 Re1 Draw/perpetual.> yes. You're right. he gets the perp

| Jan-07-07 | | whiteshark: to shorten the 'intolerable' waiting period a little, here is a nice story about to the Fritz/Rybka topic . . . . <Help me, my tool is a fool, too> http://www.xs4all.nl/~timkr/chess2/...
read no. 330: Fritz 10 allows mate in 1, too

| Jan-07-07 | | GeauxCool: This is from earlier:
<Nibiru: After 40.a6 can black play Re7? If 41.Qxd6 then Qc7 and if a7 then Rb7. Or am I missing mate in 27 after 40.a6 Re7 41.a7 Rb7 42.Qxd6 Rxa7 43.Qe5/f6+ ?> <Karpova: 40.a6 Re7 41.a7 Rb7 42.Rc3 and white wins.> <Nibiru: Yes of course Karpova, I had the black pawn placed on b4 :-( Would be rather handy for GMAN in that line.> <Nibiru>Hello! Maybe this makes no difference, the game is obviously lost for black. But if you think a pawn on b4 would be rather handy, then why not get that pawn to b4 with <41...b4> instead of playing <41...Rb7>. Because then you would prevent <Karpova>'s <42.Rc3>, Thanks! |

40.a6 Re7 41.a7 b4 42.Qb8 Re8 43.Qxd6 Qd8 44.Qc6 and 45.Rg3 cannot be prevented |

| Jan-07-07 | | Nibiru: Thanks GeauxCool, Karpova.
Nice link whiteshark. I read no. 321 as well and what is the world a small place! He there mentiones Patriek Vleeming and I played that guy 2 weeks ago! I drew against him, he's rated exactly 300 points higher than me (he has 2089 and I have 1789 though I had 1915 a couple of years ago). We're Dutch btw. |

| Jan-07-07 | | edda zeitz: <Whiteshark: Ja, jeg er en dårlig profiler.
Zeitz er også en liten by i Tyskland.>
After your confession of being a profiler working part-time for CSI, I was so surprised that I forgot to give you a hint of my whereabouts.
Since the game is coming to an end now – at least I hope that AN will soon climb out of the trenches, wiggling a white flag and shouting “Don´t shoot, I surrender!” – I will provide you with some information: My mother is Norwegian and when I was a child she told me many sagas and also fairy-tales of beautiful Huldra and other trolls living on Dofrefjell and in Rondane mountains; she also narrated the encounter of Peer Gynt in the hall of the mountain king with the king´s daughter, but she NEVER mentioned trolls roaming the steppe disguised as wolves and playing chess. I have seen Sognefjorden in the sunshine and it´s marvelous. And I have even seen Bergen without rain, it´s quite nice. But since it´s raining there on the average 400 days a year you can´t live in Bergen. Your guess about Zeitz is ok, it is a name of a German town, but became as well a family name in the 18th century (when people leaving their home used town names as family names). PS: Have you ever been on Prekestolen?

It's very nice to hear that I was chosen after <Thorsson> declined and I'm thankful indeed!
I think that your idea to originate this scholarship was a very good one! As you said, you want the winner to <create more chess> and I support this idea.
There are non-premium members who contributed much more analysis than I did.
In addition to that I won't be able to dedicate as much time to the chess challenges to come as i dedicated to this one. That's why I think that someone else should receive this scholarship and decline. Nonetheless, thanks to everybody who voted for me - It's a great honour and makes me happy! |
|
| Jan-07-07 | | chesstoplay: Dear Karpova,
Yet again... your good sportmanship shines!
Thank you for your caring and thoughtful reply.
Good people create good chess -- and you Rock!
We will extend the scholarship to another of the World Team non-premium members. Thank you for all your chess efforts.

 | | Tabanus: Young <Dionyseus> was very active last autumn (I believe he was a premium member then) when he contributed much and also spotted black's weak point f7. He has been rather quiet lately, but I consider him a worthy winner. |
|
| Jan-07-07 | | chesstoplay: Thanks Tabanus,
I read through many of Dionyseus's posts.
My wife and I take this scholarship seriously.
We would like to see it go on for years.
I have thanked chessgames.com for their support of our scholarship effort by adding three years to my current premium membership. I would urge everybody to that has enjoyed the many benefits of chessgames.com that is not a premium member to become one. I would also suggest to existing premium members that they support a wonderful chess effort by chessgames.com to add to their current premium memberships. The Arno Nickel game is a piece of chess history and I am pleased to be a part (a tiny, tiny part) of this experience. I really like the quality of care and concern for chess and each other the World Team members have shown. The very high level of good sprotsmanship overall is thrilling! One of our toasts for New Years was "More chess for all." That is our wish for all the fine players here with so much passion and heart for the game of chess. |

| Jan-07-07 | | mack: Do any London-based members of The World want to have a piss-up when we finally win? |
|
| Jan-07-07 | | chesstoplay: WannaBe is trying to get a group together at the end of May at the Chicago Open in the US. |
|
| Jan-07-07 | | twinlark: <mack> A RL piss-up? That's a bit revolutionary. If I had the fare, I'd join you. I was thinking we could all have a gigantic piss-up on Beer when this is all over. Now that'd be a party!! We could invite Arno. |
|
| Jan-07-07 | | mack: Not to worry, <twinlark>. I'll have a pint or ten in your honour when the day comes. |

 | | Tabanus: 25 years ago in London I got arrested for "disturbance of public order". About time to do it again. |
|
| Jan-07-07 | | mack: < 25 years ago in London I got arrested for "disturbance of public order". About time to do it again.> Yeah? Would you be up for it? |
|
| Jan-07-07 | | Nibiru: Imagine the headlines: Hell's chessplayers gang shock London! |
|
Jan-07-07
 | | Tabanus: <mack> If several of the players here could come... yes, that would be fun. |
|
| Jan-07-07 | | mack: Fantastic; well, we've already got one more than I anticipated. |
