*****

Oct-05-15  Olsonist: This is a puzzle of the first rank.
Oct-05-15  Steve.Patzer: It is rank, I will give you that.
Oct-05-15  ajile: White wasn't so Lequoy in this game.
Oct-05-15  saturn2: Qxf2 followed by mate.
White's 16th Qg5 was a ?? move.
Oct-05-15  dark.horse: A "Bobby Fischer Teaches Chess" special.
Oct-05-15  kevin86: Thanks to the bishop pin after the queen is taken- black's rook will give immediate mate; or...if the sac is refused, the queen mates the next move.

gawain: A return to the Monday comfort zone. Throw the Q on the fire at f2 and simple back rank mate follows.

White's 15th and 16th moves provide teachable moments.

Oct-05-15  thegoodanarchist: What are we taught about pawn grabbing in the opening? White, of course in hindsight, should have developed his DSB to connect the rooks.
Oct-05-15  CHESSTTCAMPS: This is a nice practical little tactic that appears regularly in different forms and various problem forums such as Chess Tactics Server and others: 16... Qxf2+ 17.Rxf2 (Kh1 Qxf1#) Rd1#. Always watch that back rank! White would be safe with the queen on f4 instead.
Oct-05-15  CHESSTTCAMPS: ... or in this case, Qf3 as Penguincw said.
Oct-05-15  Once: How many times have we seen a quick mate where the loser castles kingside but doesn't move his queenside bishop? And if the Bc1 doesn't get into the game, the Ra1 is probably going to be under-employed too.

Move dem bishops. Let de rook breathe, breathe, breathe.

It's not rocket science. And yet apparently it is.

Oct-05-15  YouRang: <Once> Yep, I was just going to say that the white Bc1 is the "mole" secretly working for black.

Sure, overtly he feigns loyalty to white by protecting the queen on g5, yet covertly he shields the incoming assassin by by obstructing the only guard at a1.

Oct-05-15  The Kings Domain: Nice miniature.
Oct-05-15  agb2002: Black is one pawn down.

White threatens 17.Qxh4.

Black can make the most of White's weak back rank with 16... Qxf2+ and mate next.

Bubo bubo: "Thanks" to the DSB still sitting sluggishly on his home square, the white back-rank is weak, allowing a 2# with 16...Qxf2+ 17.Rxf2 Rd1# or 17.Kh1 Qxf1#

Penguincw: < HowDoesTheHorsieMove: Congratulations, <Penguincw>. A nice Monday puzzle, not too hard or too easy. >

Thanks. :)

< jith1207: Lol.. Probably someone commenting on Sunday about a possible Monday puzzle makes life easier for the site admins in the weekend.

Well, that is a bummer if you can't solve a Monday puzzle, solving a day before doesn't count for this week's tally. :D >

Well, you know, this site has a Facebook page, and will occasionally release the puzzle before it's released. :)

Oct-05-15  stacase: How come I never get one this easy in a real game?
Oct-05-15  mel gibson: Too easy - but good for a Monday.
Oct-05-15  whiteshark: <17...Qxf2+!!> It's good to see people who play exd5 in the French as White get punished like this.

w/s out

Oct-05-15  houtenton: <penguincw> do you live in the pacific ocean on the international dateline? I wonder at which moment the site change to tomorrow in CET.
Oct-05-15  Mating Net: <houtenton> <penguincw> <do you live in the pacific ocean on the international dateline?> He lives in Antarctica.
Oct-05-15  Nullifidian: 16... ♕xf2+ 17. ♖xf2 (♔h1 ♕xf1#) ♖d1#
Oct-06-15  patzer2: A day late but not a second short in seeing Bobby Fischer teaches Monday is mate-in-two after 16...Qxf2+!

White's decisive mistake was <16. Qg5??> Instead, 16. Qf5 = (+0.01 @ 26 depth, Deep Fritz 14) holds.
