Feb-20-18 | | patzer2: Black exploits the overworked Queen and the undefended Rook with 20...Qa4!, which also solves today's Tuesday puzzle. White's decisive mistake was 14. bxc5?, allowing 14...Nxg2+ -+ (-2.35 @ 28 ply, Stockfish 8). Instead, 14. Nxh4 Qxh4 15. bxc5 = (+0.15 @ 29 ply, Stockfish 8) holds it level. |
Feb-20-18 | | Cheapo by the Dozen: Nice one. I only got it when I catalogued threats and realized Black didn't have much that looked dire other than ... Nf3. |
Feb-20-18 | | leRevenant: I also tried the slower <ycsidney: ......Bg4 as good?> |
Feb-20-18 | | Viennablue: Just like ycsidney, i also found 20...Bg4. |
Feb-20-18 | | AlicesKnight: 20.... Qa4 wins at least a piece. Any more than this? Seems not - White chose instant death. |
Feb-20-18 | | saturn2: <Viennablue 20 Bg4> 21 Be2 |
Feb-20-18 | | malt: 20...Qa4 to lure the Queen from f3
21.Be2 Q:b5 |
Feb-20-18 | | DAbrahams: oh hey it's actually a Tuesday puzzle I feel much better now |
Feb-20-18 | | Pchief: Wonder why white didn't even bother CASTLING? |
Feb-20-18 | | cocker: I nearly gave up, but eventually looked for something a bit more imaginative. |
Feb-20-18 | | dannydoc: 21 for white should be Be2, not Qxa4? |
Feb-20-18 | | morfishine: Coincidentally, I read <Sally Simpson>'s post on this game just a couple of days ago After <20...Qa4> White is toast: 21.Qe2 Qxb5 22.Bxh3 Qxd3 Black is up 2 pawns plus an exchange
Time to head to happy-hour

 | | offramp: <DAbrahams>, it's nice to see you here. Daniel. As you took part in the British Champs, are you now a British citizen? Or is it a Commonwealth thing? |
Feb-20-18 | | DAbrahams: <offramp>
The BC merely requires residency (minimum one year primary residence in the UK). There's also space in the rules for them to allow exceptions for people who don't meet the reqs otherwise, but lol at that ever applying to me. |

Feb-20-18
 | | pittpanther: I actually found this difficult to see - took me much longer than a typical Tuesday. |
Feb-20-18 | | Pasker: Found Qa4 quickly. Winning the queen (In this case a rook or a bishop)this way is a common tactic when the queen is the only that piece defends checkmate. I was looking for that typical deflection move and found Qa4 which wins free material sadly not the queen. |
Feb-20-18 | | gofer: The only reason I saw this was I knew there was something to see. I looked
long and hard before I found it. <OTB I doubt I would have...> |
Feb-20-18 | | dumbgai: <Phony Benoni> I had no idea you’re in Detroit. I’m in the Canton-Plymouth-Northville area. |
Feb-20-18 | | takchess: This has inspired a new collection. Simple Puzzles but Hard for Me. |
Feb-20-18 | | BOSTER: My guess that white played 19.Rb5 ( it's difficult to find such move), and 20.Qd1 only to share with us his fun. |
Feb-20-18 | | lzromeu: <DAbrahams> miss the day, but the move, you don't. That's the matter.
Do you will feel better to know I miss this puzzle? I'm a Wednesday level player. |
Feb-20-18 | | BOSTER: < patzer2:Black exploits the overworked Queen>.
It is questionable to say that white Queen was overworked. |
Feb-20-18
 | | Peligroso Patzer: I'm not sure this is a Tuesday-strength puzzle (seems harder). As soon as one considers the key move (20. ... Qa4), the tactics are easy to calculate; but the deflection/double attack idea is not altogether obvious. Compare White's 8th in: Yermolinsky vs E Tate, 2001 |
Feb-20-18 | | Sniffles: Beware! Poison Queen. |
Sep-29-20 | | sea7kenp: Indeed! That Black Queen is, quite simply Laced with Cyanide! |
