Wan Yunguo won his IM norms at the 17th Asian Cities Championship for Dubai Cup in April 2011, the Aeroflot Open B in 2012, and at the 2nd Indonesia Open Chess Championship (2012) held in October 2012. He placed 2nd at the 2013 Bangkok Open, picking up his first GM norm for his efforts. He qualified via Zonal 3.5 for the World Cup (2013), but lost to Michael Adams in the 1st round to exit the tournament.
