Jun-25-17  zanzibar: Where was the Sunday States published?
Jun-26-17  zanzibar: Perhaps in Mississipi (specifically Jefferson County), where Galbreath was born?

The New Yorkers were a little upset that Galbreath, fairly unknown (east of the Mississippi?), was selected to the team.

Jun-26-17  zanzibar: <"Unlike the great majority of players, he is a total abstainer from tobacco, as also from liquor">
Jun-26-17  zanzibar: And yet, despite the apparent skepticism (due partially to his abnormal healthy habits?), on March 11, 1898 the BDE publishes several of games under the heading:

<Leans Towards Brilliancy>.

Included is the famous Galbreath--Harding game.

MissScarlett: His name puts me in mind of the American economist, <J K Galbraith>, https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/John_...

Amusing to read Krugman's characterisation of <JK> as a media personality whose work isn't taken seriously by academics...

OhioChessFan: Krugman said that? He ought to invest in some mirrors. While I disagree with JKG, he had a nice way with the written word, something Krugman never had.
