 | | offramp: Yeah well... Chess players' toilets are like <Trainspotting> toilets, covered in the grossest graffiti, whole toilet rolls rammed down the bunghole, 9 types of body fluid coating the walls, and they used this venue to cheat in? |

 | | HeMateMe: How about using transparent restrooms made of 100% soft plastic? This was used in the first X-Men movie. Magneto, master of magnetism, was held in an all plastic jail cell. He is seen playing chess there with soft rubber chess pieces--no metal allowed near him. |

 | | Check It Out: A number of comments show empathy towards Shevchenko, wishing him well. If he did use the cell phone to cheat, I say give it to him good. |
|
Oct-17-24 | | areknames: The guy shouldn't be allowed to go to the toilet at all, if he needs to use his bowels constantly he should be forced to wear an incontinence pad. If he stinks the place up, he can have his pad changed by professionals whenever required. Of course the clock continues running so he will probably need to make the time control before sheeting himself. |

 | | Sally Simpson: HI Check it Out,
<A number of comments show empathy towards Shevchenko..> We really should give the benefit of doubt until FIDE fully investigate. This one has a lot of 'iffyness' about it. Two phones, a note, public toilets...and he has denied it. If found not guilty he can sue for x amount of Euros and live in a penthouse next to Hans in London. |
|
Oct-18-24 | | boz: I don't know what FIDE should do, but if I were a professional chess player, I would never sit down at a board opposite him, ever. |
|
Oct-18-24 | | Olavi: <boz: I don't know what FIDE should do, but if I were a professional chess player, I would never sit down at a board opposite him, ever.> That is easy to say if you have never been a professional player. So, you choose not to pay the rent? |

 | | perfidious: Following Jonathan Tamayo's win of the main event at the WSOP in July, cheating allegations reared their head. To the best of my recollection, I have never faced him at the table. Would I be wary in the aftermath of what, to my mind, seems possibly questionable conduct? Of course. Would I let it deter me from playing with him? Definitely not. I have a job to do. Full stop.

|
Oct-18-24 | | boz: <olavi> are you trying to argue that somebody's rent won't get paid because they refused to play Schevchenko? We're not talking about rumors here or vague speculation. if other GMs take a principled stand and don't play him, it's Schevchenko's rent that would go unpaid. |

We're not talking about rumors here or vague speculation. if other GMs take a principled stand and don't play him, it's Schevchenko's rent that would go unpaid.> So are you changing your position to that you would refuse to play him (after he has served his ban) if all other GMs do the same? |

 | | MissScarlett: <FIDE's Fair Play Commission has now confirmed in a statement that a preliminary investigation has begun and that the 22-year-old is suspended for 75 days until January 1. Based on the preliminary investigation by FPL, that established a prima facie case against GM Kirill Shevchenko, EDC has suspended GM Shevchenko for a period of 75 days from today, i.e. until 1 January 2025, from any official activities as a player. This means the grandmaster misses the European Chess Club Cup, that began in Serbia on Sunday. Shevchenko was scheduled to play for the top seeded SuperChess from Romania, but the team captain GM Ivan Sokolov is now listed in his place as a player. He'll also miss the World Rapid and Blitz Championships in New York, ending a day before the suspension runs out. FIDE noted that the suspension "would not indicate that GM Shevchenko is guilty of a cheating offense" and that he is to be investigated "on the assumption of innocence."> https://www.chess.com/news/view/she... |

 | | Fusilli: <perfidious: ...
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xU-... I know almost nothing about poker and nothing at all about poker tournaments, but I watched the first four minutes of that video and this is what I understood: a) Poker solvers are the Komodo of poker.
b) Spectators are allowed to have their smartphones and even computers right there in the tournament hall.
c) Players have their teams right there, feet from them during tournaments, and they can freely talk to them and even look at the computer screens during tournament play.
d) Policing is apparently limited to a "please don't use poker solvers in the tournament hall" announcement.
e) BTW, there are millions of dollars at play.
Did I get this right? I hope I got it wrong, because this seems the stupidest way of running a poker tournament. |

 | | perfidious: <Fusilli>, that is about the size of things--for now. At the Series, there was a warning against using software at table, but no clear guidelines. Just after I began playing there in mid June, one player shoulder-surfed a pro, catching them using a game theory optimal (GTO) solver. There then followed a further milquetoast warning, but one which had no real teeth, since the regulations could hardly be tightened up midstream. Yesterday, I read an interview with one of the top tournament directors in poker; he stated that further anti-cheating measures are to come, likely involving a total ban on cell phone use at the table. On a personal basis, I would not care, as I never use mine except at breaks. Many recreational players or bad regulars are on theirs whenever they are not in a hand, for all sorts of reasons. I will take any edge within the rules and have always been glad to see these players distracted. |

 | | Sally Simpson: I'm thinking Shevchenko will have possibly welcomed the Yoo incident as it knock him off the bad boy headlines for a day or two. The official FIDE link for those amongst us who have chess.com phobia. https://www.fide.com/news/3266
Fusilli - playing cards are the Devils Toys. It is too late for Perfidious but you can be saved. Grab a of copy of any MCO, clutch it too your breast and recite the first 3 moves of the Ruy Lopez. |

 | | Check It Out: <Fusilli> I play poker in a home game that's been revolving for years. You could win or lose about $300 a night, but it's mostly to blow off steam and laugh at eachother. Perfs too good for our game. We like newbs and drunks, as long as a veteran vouches for them. You'd be welcome ;) |

 | | Fusilli: <check it out> That's sounds nice, thank you for inviting me! I'm coming over, and I'm sure you won't mind if I live stream the game for <perf> and I call him now and then to ask what I should do... like every single time I have to do something. I hear poker regulations are lax! |

My future looks GREAT! |

 | | offramp: I'll tell you are quick story...
I worked at a Metro Train station. I was with a Supervisor. He had been given ONE rule: <NEVER TRAVEL IN THE LIFTS>, because IF the lift breaks down with passengers, he will be the first call for assistance. He would look a right lemon IN UNIFORM in a stalled lift. One awful day he travelled in the lift with fellow passengers. The lift stalled. It was stuck.
The fire brigade had to sort out the mess. Jaws of life! The supervisor was told off by his manager. His excuse was that he had used the <lift one single time ever done it>. Everyone knew that he used the lift constantly.

 | | MissScarlett: <IMPORTANT UPDATE as of January 01, 2025: FPL has finished a full-fledged investigation into the incident involving GM Kirill Shevchenko and passed its materials to EDC. Meanwhile, the provisional suspension of GM Shevchenko from any official activities as a player was prolonged for 60 days staring from January 01, 2025.> https://www.fide.com/fide-fpl-and-e... | | MissScarlett: <GM Kirill Shevchenko, ranked 75th in the world, has received a three-year worldwide ban from chess, with one year suspended, allowing him to return to competitive play in October 2026. The 22-year-old confessed to hiding a phone in the toilet but denied using it to cheat with an engine. FIDE announced today that the Ukrainian grandmaster has been found guilty of breaching Article 11.7(e) of the FIDE Disciplinary Code following the scandal during the Spanish Team Championship in Melilla, the Spanish enclave on the North African coast, on October 14, 2024.> https://www.chess.com/news/view/kir... |
