[what is this?] |
Woman Grandmaster.
Maili-Jade Ouellet of St. Lambert (just outside of Montreal) scored 5 wins and 2 losses in her debut at the Baku Olympiad (Women) (2016). She won her title at the 2013 North American women's youth (U-12 category) chess championship(1) in Toronto and later scored 6/11 at the 2016 WYCC (women's) U14 championship(2). An early round loss to her country's compatriot Constance Wang (who finished tied for share of 1st-2nd overall, 2nd after a head-to-head tie-breaker with the sections winner Cosme Contreras Trilce of Peru) may have broken possible chances for placing higher in the 2017 Pan-American (women's) junior U18 section at Costa Rica(3) by finishing with a respectable 5.5/9 points. She finished with 5 points after 9 rounds at the U16 NAYCC 2017 tournament held in mid-July at New Jersey (4, 5) and won a blitz tournament run by Judith Polgar in July(6) of 2017. She later became the Canadian women's zonal champion by winning (women's(7)) zonal group 2.2 in 2017. She won the 2022 Canadian Women's Zonal with a perfect 9/9 score. That made her the 2022 Canadian Woman Champion, and qualified her for Canada's Women's Olympiad Team and the Women's World Cup. References / Sources (1) http://ratings.fide.com/tournament_... Nov-03-18 | | sonia91: She drew with black against Aleksandra Goryachkina today at the Women's World Championship (round 1, 1st game), at some point Ouellet was even winning. |

 | | FSR: She won the 2022 Canadian Women's Zonal with a 9-0 score. https://chess-results.com/tnr628394... A very weak tournament. The pandemic must have had an effect, but I have also heard that the Canadian Chess Federation notified eligible players of the event only a week or so beforehand. This made it very difficult to get time off work, arrange travel, etc. The top-rated players (Canadian ratings, not FIDE) were WGM Ouellet (2179), WIM Svitlana Demchenko (2079), WFM Alexandra Botez (2020), Glenda Baylon (1858), and Michelle Hua (1665). The median rating was 1513.5, and five of the fourteen players were rated below 1100! Top finishers behind Ouellet were Demchenko (7.5), Guo Yo Han (5.5), Botez and Hua (both 5). Guo Yo Han must be underrated, since her starting rating was only 1444. |
