MAXIM SOROKIN
(born Jan-22-1968, died Jun-30-2007, 39 years old) Russia

[what is this?]

Maxim Ilyich Sorokin was a Russian GM (1992) who learned to play at the Chess School of Alexander Nikolayevich Panchenko. He was a highly respected chess-trainer: he was put in charge of the Russian women's team, he was the chief trainer of the Elista Grandmaster School, and also seconded Sergei Rublevsky in the 2007 Candidates matches in Elista. In 2005 he achieved his peak rating, an impressive 2599.

GM Ruslan Shcherbakov wrote, "Max's erudition was almost legendary among his friends--it seemed that he knew everything, be it mathematics, medicine or foreign languages". (http://www.chesstoday.net/ July 2nd, 2007)

Sadly, in 2007 he died of complications from a car accident that occurred driving home from the Candidates matches in Elista.

Kibitzer's Corner
Apr-20-04  shr0pshire: Sorokin almost has twice as many draws as he has wins, disappointing. He has some sharp games, and beaten some good opponents. It is unfortunate he doesn't play out more of his games that draw under the 20 move mark.

MissScarlett: Not to be confused with <Max Zorin>:

<Zorin was born in Dresden around the end of World War II, after which Dresden became part of East Germany. He later moved to France and became a leading businessman, operating on the microchip market. However, it is revealed later in the movie that he was the product of Nazi medical experimentation during the war, in which pregnant women were injected with massive quantities of steroids in an attempt to create "super-children." Most of the pregnancies failed. The few surviving babies grew to become extraordinarily intelligent—but also psychopathic.>
