PHILIP CLEMANCE
(born Feb-25-1959, died Apr-19-2003, 44 years old) New Zealand

[what is this?]
Philip Alan Clemance was born in 1959 in New Zealand. He was an excellent over the board player and became New Zealand Correspondence Champion in 1976. In the mid 1980's whilst staying with Murray Chandler in London he met his future wife and then US Women's Champion Diane Savereide. Unfortunately their marriage didn't last but Clemance remained in the US. He was intending to marry again but sadly this didn't happen as he was stricken with stomach cancer and passed away in 2003.

Aug-18-05  mcgee: Around 1983 he was rook and two pieces up in a serious game and lost it. Miles (appropriately seeing as it´s Clemance´s only game here) was one of the judges in Blunder Of The Year for Not The British Chess Magazine in 1984/5 and described Clemance´s feat as ´death defying stupidity ´. Miles, like many of the panel that year, had (erroneously) assumed that Clemance was in time trouble.
Aug-19-05  Benzol: <Richard Taylor> Richard do you remember or did you ever meet/play Phil Clemance?
Aug-21-05  Benzol: Anybody have any info on Phil Clemance's wife Diane Saveridge?
Aug-21-05  WMD: < Diane Saveridge>

Where did I see that name in the last 24 hours - I mean, apart from this page?

Aug-21-05  WMD: I remember now - her name is actually Diane Savereide.

She played in the same global simultaneous exhibition in which Mickey Adams beat the great hairy monster:

Kasparov vs Adams, 1988

Kasparov vs D Savereide, 1988

Aug-21-05  TheSlid: <the great hairy monster> What was his late father called - Kim Kong?

Jonathan Sarfati: <McGee>, that Clemance game was against Bruce Gloistein. Clemance had a huge material lead but threw away one piece as a decoy for a back-rank mate involving a Q-sac, but there was no mate. It mightn't even have been lost then but IIRC he was so shocked that he resigned.

<Benzol>Diane Savereide was the US's leading female player before the influx of lots of ex-Soviets.

I played Philip a few times with +2-1=2 IIRC. I was sorry to read in NZ Chess that he he lost his life to cancer when he was about the age I am now.

Dec-12-08  Benzol: <Jonathan> Thanks for the note. BTW Bruce has two games here, see Bruce Gloistein

No sign of his game against Phil yet.

Dec-12-08  MaczynskiPratten: Phil Clemance was one of the main authors of "Not the BCM" - Murray Chandler being another. As far as I know it was a one-off, but it was one of the funniest things on chess I have ever read. Blunder of the Year was just one of several great articles. One of my great regrets is that I mislaid my copy.
Mar-27-14  Bruce Graham: I used to play him at the New Plymouth Chess Club when we were kids. I gave him all of my chess books when I left town. He didn't say thanks.

Richard Taylor: <Benzol> I never met him. I think he was playing correspondence chess when I was. But I "restarted" chess in 1978 and started correspondence and tournament chess that year. His name was around. I cant recall seeing him though.
