MissScarlett: Brooklyn Daily Eagle, April 25th 1916, p.18:

<Great Neck, L. I., April 25. - John C. Tatum, the wealthy Manhattan cotton broker, whose suit for divorce against his wife, her counter charges and long fight for possession of Pontica Lodge, their home, last year attracted wide attention, died at his home last night after four days illness with pneumonia.

Mr. Tatum was forty-eight years old and had been in the cotton brokerage business since his ealy youth. He was born in Brooklyn and received his education in the public schools. The business of his father was turned over to him many years ago, but he held fast to his determination to continue it under the old Firm name of D. O. Tatum. He was a member of the New York Yacht Club, the Merchants' Club and the West Side Tennis Club. [...]>

Looking for definite evidence that this Tatum is the same one who frequented Brooklyn chess circles for a few years in the 1890s - before all but disappearing - proved harder than I thought. None of the other death notices I've seen make such a connection. Strange to say the link comes from his other pursuits. In the <BDE> of April 19th 1898, p.4, in a piece citing the rare number who combine chess with proficiency in other sports, we find: <Another instance may be cited in John C. Tatum, the well-known chess amateur of this borough, who is a hardy yachtsman and a champion tennis player, beside being clever with the gloves.>

I'm sure something more substantial in this regard would be found, if required.

jnpope: No question that is the obit of the chess player (notice is also given in the <American Chess Bulletin>, v13 n5, May/June 1916, p134).

By the way, his yacht flag was a red rook on a white field!

Just curious, but how did you find this out?!?

jnpope: While trying to track down his middle name I was looking through his automobile registration (he drove a Packard), his Yacht club membership, and his legal filings (business incorporations, divorce case, and will).

He apparently flew that flag on the "Nakta" and the "Mink":
