Mar-19-19  Gejewe: Thibaut is (or was ?) a Belgian national master, as can be read in "Histoire des maitres Belges" by Wasnair and Jadoul. He participated in all the Belgian championships from 1948 up to 1961 but never succeeded in winning the title. But the championship of the chessclub "Cercle Colle" could be regarded as strong as a national championship and Thibaut won it brilliantly in 1951 ahead of a whole range of the best Belgian players. A few months afer this strong performance Thibaut was awarded the national master title by the Belgian chess federation. He was a notably strong blitzplayer who won the national blitzchampionship on five occasions. Unfortunately in 1961 a severe traffic accident which resulted in amnesia and took him two years to recover, kept him away from chess. He had to more or less learn to play chess all over again but by sheer determination came back to his former level of play. We also learn from Wasnair and Jadoul that in 1950 together with some friends he founded his own chessclub. The "cercle Thibaut" at one time had 256(!) members.. In 1988 when the book about the Belgian masters was published the club was still in existence.
