  Sally Simpson: ***

I was talking to Fan just before the prize giving at the 2009 Scottish Championship which ran other Open events alongside it.

She had finished sole second in her section and was waiting to collect her cheque.

Suddenly it was announced there was a joint second and it was Rhian Hughes and Katie Martin. Both surprised looking girls went up and got their cheques.

Myself and Fan interrupted the proceedings and pretty soon the cheques were taken back from Rhian and Katie and a new one made out to Fan.

Moral of the story is if you suddenly get given a cheque at a chess event then take it and run out of the building.

Katie posed for a picture after the cheque was taken from her.

perfidious: <Geoff>, in the 1995 Vermont championship, I was awarded the state title on tiebreak and handed the trophy; then, minutes later, the director called my hotel room--he had miscalculated and the player I had supposedly beaten out actually walked away winner. All I could do was laugh.
