Kibitzer's Corner
Dec-01-05   lentil: "Stuart Haslinger, an untitled 20-year-old rated 2310 ... [went] through the first 10 rounds of the British Championship undefeated, in the process turning in a rating performance of 2666."

[note: he lost in the 11th and finished tied for 4 - 8 with 7.5/11. He was the only untitled player in the top 25.]...

"A couple of years ago he was struck down by a rare genetic disorder which seems to effect [sic] the boys of his family as they enter adulthood. He has spent much of the last two years in hospital with nothing to do -- except study chess. Then a few months ago some drugs were found that improved his condition and he was able to start playing serious tournaments again...."

Joe Gallagher. New in Chess Magazine 2002 Nr. 7. p. 47.

Strangely, his rating is still given as 2310, despite this and a +10 -3 =8 in the 2005 British Championships.

Dec-01-05   lentil: oops. sorry. that +10 -3 =8 is for the combined 2004 and 2005 champs

Oct-24-09   Paint My Dragon: Congratulations to Stewart on his winning the Hoogeveen Unive Open today by a clear point following wins against Friedel, Brodsky and Nijboer in successive rounds.

His initiative-seeking style seems to be paying dividends.
