Jonathan Sarfati: Tom was born in Holland, and was a leading player in the South Island of New Zealand for many years. He lived in Nelson where there was little competition for practice. His son Peter Van Dijk also became a high-ranking player.

It was a shock to learn in 1988 that Tom died suddenly at a relatively yourg age.

Nov-11-14  ljfyffe: Correspondence chess champion of New Zealand 1974, 1982(Jointly with P.A. Garbett).

Jonathan Sarfati: Obituary by Dennis Boyce in New Zealand Chess, October 1988, pp. 104–107; online at http://newzealandchess.co.nz/nzches...

Tom was a highly respected dentist, loved family man, and popularizer of chess in Nelson. He twice won the South Island Championship and the NZ Correspondence Championship, and represented NZ at the Skopje 1972 Olympiad, and held the New Zealand Master title.
