Knight13: No kibizing for Sadler yet? I know he's a Grandmaster. I don't know why he stoped playing chess since 2003, I mean it's not recording at chessgames.com. I wonder why. But I vote that he was a great player.

acirce: He has written great instructive opening books, focusing on ideas and typical plans, like <Queens Gambit Declined> and <The Slav>
Oct-24-04   Cecil Brown: Matthew Sadler retired from competitive chess around about 1999 because he couldn't make enough money to justify the workload.

As England's number 3 he never got enough super tournament invitations, although when he played Tilburg in '98 I think he finished unbeaten in third place.

I read somewhere he got a job with the computer firm Hewlett Packard in Amsterdam. He still plays a bit in the European leagues and writes for New In Chess.

His book on the Queens Gambit Declined was BCF book of the year in 2000 and I think he won a Gold medal on board three in the '96 Olympiad and in the European Team Championships that England won in about 1997.

Oct-24-04   WMD: I think it was 1998 that Matthew made his debut in the Amber Melody tournament and had a terrible run in the blindfold event, losing, if memory serves, his first six games. He did, however, have the consolation of beating Karpov:

Oct-24-04   Cecil Brown: The following miniature is one of Sadler's most famous wins and original ideas and is missing from the database. 10 Nb1 was to give the queen a flight square otherwise 10 .. b6 would trap the queen. 10.Na4 is probably best.

Knight13: PLAYER OF THE DAY! Cool. He's got a small positive score against Karpov. See http://www.chessgames.com/perl/ches.... He also beat some strong GMs, IMs, all over the place.

whatthefat: Yes, it's a shame that he quit, as he probably hadn't even reached his peak yet.

I highly recommend his opening books. They are written with humour, understanding, and a great deal of clarity. I believe the one on the QGD won the british chess federation book of the year award too.

Sep-08-06   Cauldronspy: Today my eyes stopped on a name in one of my chess dbs. Matthew Sadler. Hey isnt that the same name at that of my instructor at HP back in spring 2003? I looked up his name with Google and yes indeed it's the same dude.

Shame I didnt knew that time we share a same passion for chess.

PS If you wanna beat him try a game of Quake.

Cheers Matthew!

Aug-11-08   piroflip: twenty years ago he was called "the new Fischer".

shame he gave it all up.

blacksburg: very good writer, this Sadler fellow.
Apr-21-09   WhiteRook48: I have one of Sadler's books. He has a win against some guy named Richardson that is outstanding. It doesn't seem to be in the database
Apr-29-09   WhiteRook48: and someone named Ellis, with a powerful attacking initiative. It goes like this: 1 d4 Nf6 2 Nf3 d5 3 Bf4 e6 4 e3 Be7 5 Nbd2 0-0 6 Bd3 Nbd7 7 c3 c5 8 Ne5! Nxe5 9 dxe5! May-13-09   piroflip: At age 14 Matthew was dubbed "the new Fischer". How sad that he had to quit the game to make a living.

blacksburg: hmmm....i just noticed that despite writing books on the QGD, the Slav, and the Semi-Slav, Sadler usually played the QGA. if only he had written a book on the QGA.

(by Steve Berry, 1998)

May-13-09   WhiteRook48: Matthew Sadler, recommending chess books:
<My System> by Aron Nimzowitsch "A classic. To be honest, a lot of it is rather quirky, but the sections on pawn structure in particular made a deep impression on me. Not to be confused with <The System> by Hans Berliner which is not on my recommended list!"
Jun-01-09   WhiteRook48: um, actually he's sort of a new Fischer because he quit the game like Fischer did
Jun-08-09   piroflip: the guy (Fischer) is dead and buried.
why do some insist on still sticking the knife in?

R.I.P. Bobby.

Oct-23-09   tal60: Sadler was a great player... one of my favorite authors.

In "Tips for Young Players" he gives a little idea of why he quit (besides the money) .. he basically said whenever he would study with Kramnik or Anand they would see things in a flash and then start throwing pieces around, whereas he would ask "wait, why not this?" and they would just look at him and tap a piece... he felt he wasnt on that level.

but still an amazing player and elite author
