Knight13: No kibizing for Sadler yet? I know he's a Grandmaster. I don't know why he stoped playing chess since 2003, I mean it's not recording at chessgames.com. I wonder why. But I vote that he was a great player.

acirce: He has written great instructive opening books, focusing on ideas and typical plans, like <Queens Gambit Declined> and <The Slav>
Oct-24-04   Cecil Brown: Matthew Sadler retired from competitive chess around about 1999 because he couldn't make enough money to justify the workload.

As England's number 3 he never got enough super tournament invitations, although when he played Tilburg in '98 I think he finished unbeaten in third place.

I read somewhere he got a job with the computer firm Hewlett Packard in Amsterdam. He still plays a bit in the European leagues and writes for New In Chess.

His book on the Queens Gambit Declined was BCF book of the year in 2000 and I think he won a Gold medal on board three in the '96 Olympiad and in the European Team Championships that England won in about 1997.

Oct-24-04   WMD: I think it was 1998 that Matthew made his debut in the Amber Melody tournament and had a terrible run in the blindfold event, losing, if memory serves, his first six games. He did, however, have the consolation of beating Karpov:

Oct-24-04   Cecil Brown: The following miniature is one of Sadler's most famous wins and original ideas and is missing from the database. 10 Nb1 was to give the queen a flight square otherwise 10 .. b6 would trap the queen. 10.Na4 is probably best.

Knight13: PLAYER OF THE DAY! Cool. He's got a small positive score against Karpov. See http://www.chessgames.com/perl/ches.... He also beat some strong GMs, IMs, all over the place.
Jul-15-05   WTHarvey: Here are some puzzles from Matthew's games: http://www.wtharvey.com/sadl.html

whatthefat: Yes, it's a shame that he quit, as he probably hadn't even reached his peak yet.

I highly recommend his opening books. They are written with humour, understanding, and a great deal of clarity. I believe the one on the QGD won the british chess federation book of the year award too.

Sep-08-06   Cauldronspy: Today my eyes stopped on a name in one of my chess dbs. Matthew Sadler. Hey isnt that the same name at that of my instructor at HP back in spring 2003? I looked up his name with Google and yes indeed it's the same dude.

Shame I didnt knew that time we share a same passion for chess.

PS If you wanna beat him try a game of Quake.

Cheers Matthew!
