  chancho: Jose Raul Capablanca's record:

<+377 -47 =265 (73.9%)>

Compare that to Garcia Martinez's (The first Cuban to obtain the GM title from FIDE) <+46 -136 =137 (35.9%)>.

He has about the same number of wins that Capa had in total losses for his entire career.

Ouch!

kingscrusher: Does anyone know if the ruy Lopez d3 system is named after this Martinez ?!
Nov-29-16  technical draw: GM Garcia Martinez's opponents are a regular who's who of great chessplayers.
Nov-29-16  technical draw: By the way the movie "Born on the Fourth of July" is not about this Cuban GM.
Jul-16-21  TheBish: It's odd reading that someone other than Capablanca was the first Cuban GM! (One of the best ever wasn't good enough for the title!) Of course I know that the title didn't exist then, but it seems like glossing over the fact that Capa ever existed.

"Since FIDE did not award the Grandmaster title posthumously, world-class players who died prior to 1950, including World Champions Steinitz, Lasker, Capablanca, and Alekhine, never received the title." From Wikipedia.
