Jun-03-14  zluria: Is there any place where I can replay the live coverage?
Jun-03-14  SimonWebbsTiger: @<zluria>

I chatted with the webmaster, a friend of mine.

Maybe.

As of now - no.

Jun-03-14  Eti fan: The final blitz standings plus replay https://arena.chessdom.com/#/stream...
Jun-03-14  geeker: Sally, thanks for the info.
Jun-03-14  geeker: [Added] I saw a Chessvibes column that credited 3...Bb4 to Alapin, specifically "he [Carlsen] countered Karjakin's Ruy Lopez with Alapin's crazy bishop move."
Jun-06-14  thegoodanarchist: Carlsen won a blitz tournament? That's about as surprising as Fischer or Tal winning a blitz tournament.

  Sally Simpson: Hi geeker,

3...Bb4

I checked with the Oxford Companion. They do indeed name it the Alapin.

The plan appears to be to suck forward the White Queenside pawns to make them weak and targets in the late middle game and ending.

And that is your perfect example of a note written after looking at the game and seeing 0-1.

Fred Reinfeld would give the intro something like this. (though more flamboyant, I'm making it up as I go along.)

'In 1066 when the English army where fighting William the Conquerors Normans, King Harold commanded his troops to stay firm and command the high ground

But the flank troops charged down the hill and although it looked for a while they were winning, the counter attack on that flank won the day for the Normans.

Watch how White's pawns charge down the hill only to be stopped and picked off. King Harold has to rush to the Queenside to stem the tide of pawns whilst King William guides his pawns home on the Kingside.'

I love Fred's intro's. After reading them you just cannot not wait to get into the game. It is a great pity he never lived to see Fischer lift the crown, (he passed away at the relatively young age of 53). He would have done a great book on the '72 match.

The intro to game 2 would have been a literally masterpeice.

Anyway, here is the game in question with Mr Alapin conducting the Black pieces in one of the many opening variations that bears his name.

Jun-08-14  Conrad93: You do realize the opening sucks, and that Carlsen only won due to pure luck?

Qxg6 and his stupid idea would be crushed.

Jun-08-14  Jim Bartle: conrad, I invite you to kibitz one of the live games, for example tomorrow from Norway, with suggestions and variations in real time.

No second-guessing. Recommendations at the moment. No computers.

perfidious: That would be pure gold--<conrag> explaining how these top GMs cannot play.

Nod to <chancho> for his new soubriquet bestowed on the cypher.

Jun-08-14  Conrad93: You morons would start playing 1. Nh3 OTB if he had won a losing position in blitz.

It's a crap opening, and there is a reason why Karjakin had a winning position.

Jun-08-14  Wyatt Gwyon: Excellent idea, <Jim>.
Jun-09-14  QueentakesKing: Mr.Topalov--No mas no mas?
Jun-15-14  The Last Straw: Oh. This will be rated.

MissScarlett: <We start the report by noting that the Norway Blitz tournament was FIDE rated. This is strange because originally this tournament was not supposed to be rated. Everyone agrees that it should have, but changing the rules after the event finished seems unorthodox at best and only begs the question of whether this tournament would have been rated had Carlsen finished last. As Albert Silver points out:

The blitz starts with Hikaru Nakamura as the clear number one. Well, he was the clear number one, but for a strange occurrence a couple of weeks ago. When the opening blitz tournament of Norway Chess was played to determine the drawing of lots, the organizers had adamantly declared the blitz was not rated. This decision led to a great deal of consternation and discussion among pundits, but this was the decision. Suddenly, after the event is over the organizers had a change of heart, and decided it would be rated.>

perfidious: The organisers should have adhered to their original decision, though it was probably better to rate this from the start; in attempting to redress the original wrong, they created a fine mess.
Jun-21-14  SirRuthless: We all know why they did it and we all know what would have happened had Carlsen had a middling result. That being said, Carlsen is the blitz world champion, deserving so and I accept the rating and result. Screaming conspiracy is not the gracious or useful thing to do. Besides, his seeding in the World Blitz was not based on the updates rating but on the official June list.
Jun-21-14  schweigzwang: Well this will help me understand why Carlsen gained 100 Blitz Elo while Nakamura only gained 30. Or thereabouts.
Jun-23-14  MountainMatt: <...but changing the rules after the event finished seems unorthodox at best...>

Indeed. Something is rotten in Norway.

Jun-23-14  Appaz: Is this even legal according to FIDE rating rules? It should definitely not be. Scandalous is the word, provided there is not something we don't know.
Jun-23-14  thegoodanarchist: <Appaz> You would be better able than most folks to find "something we don't know" being in Norway yourself.

Here in New Mexico, USA, I can't find much.

Jun-23-14  thegoodanarchist: <Conrad93: You morons...>

Is it really necessary to insult people with (your own) speculation as to what they might do?

It just shows rudeness and a lack of factual support too!

Jun-23-14  norami: It's true what was said, MC's performance rating was 3030, equalling Fischer's from the famous 1970 blitz tournament even after adjusting for rating inflation.
Jun-24-14  Appaz: <<thegoodanarchist> <Appaz> You would be better able than most folks to find "something we don't know" being in Norway yourself.>

I'm afraid I'm not well connected in Norwegian chess.

Because no specific information about the cause has been published, you can safely assume this was done because it favored Magnus Carlsen.

I'm <ashamed> of seeing such favoritism in my own country, this is NOT in accordance with Norwegian ideals.

eternaloptimist: Blitz chess is 1 thing that I never have been good at since really quick thinking is involved. I really admire MC for getting through this blitz tourney unscathed. Although Topa is on the other side of the spectrum. He didn't win a single game! :D
