chessgames.com: Official site (http://www.indianchessfed.org/) declares <Strongest ever in Asia - Kolkata Grandmaster Open attracts record Grandmasters!>

Currently with a perfect 2/2 are Surya Sekhar Ganguly, Chanda Sandipan, Rauf Mamedov, and Nigel Short.

The PGN is somewhat hard to obtain for this event, but we'll do our best to try to keep this page up to date. The Monroi page for the event is here: http://www.monroi.com/watch/?tnm_id...

Sep-02-09  minasina: Wow! Great players.
Sep-02-09  timhortons: lee quang liem is there but they didnt invite wesley so...

i think its rauf mamedov or mamedyarof who accuse a russian of cheating, but still his not running out of tournament, his in the hot list of organizers.

i read at polgar site that WGM anna sozulia lost her personal belongings, must be from a thief. anna sozulia is a wife of GM malakhatko, this couple is in a streak trotting around the globe jumping from one tournament to another, there here in montreal last quebec chess championship, if you guys remember malakhatko was a victim of robson chess skill in norwegian tourney...i replayed that game, i feel i can connect to it since id observe this guy keenly when his playing and check some of his game...

Troller: <timhortons: lee quang liem is there but they didnt invite wesley so...> This is an open tournament, I think most participants have volunteered. Wesley So could most likely have played here if he wanted to.

It was Mamedyarov who accused Kurnosov of cheating sometime in the spring. He's top seed here, but it looks like a lot of the unknown Indians are pretty strong, at least they are taking quite some draws from established GMs.

Sep-03-09  timhortons: thanks troller...ok Mamedyarov, i thought that complain will have a bad consequence in his career.
Sep-03-09  somitra: <timhortons: ...if you guys remember malakhatko was a victim of robson chess skill in norwegian tourney...>

Probably this game is being referred: R Robson vs V Malakhatko, 2009

Sep-03-09  jamesmaskell: Lovely position for Short against Gagunashvili's C-K after 24.Be5. Again a pity to see a C-K meeting a tragic end, but I'll let it go to see Short do his stuff.
Sep-03-09  firebyrd: Short Gagunashvili after 24. Be5:

The live transmission seems to be down though

Sep-03-09  firebyrd: Transmission back and Short has wrapped up and is now the only among the pre-tournament favourites who is on 3/3.
Sep-03-09  jahhaj: Nice game from Nigel. He had a similar win against l'Ami in the recent UK vs. Holland match.
Sep-03-09  firebyrd: GM Panchanatan tries to mate Mamedoc with NN vs P. Nalimov base says he can just do it within the 50 move limit!
Sep-03-09  firebyrd: ... and he does. Nice!

tamar: Great to have early morning chess. Breakfast at Kolkata!
Sep-03-09  Thuellin: Nigel is 3/3 now, along with Chanda Sandipan and Magesh Chandran (both of India), Enamul Hossain (Bangladesh), and young Eltaj Safarli (Azerbaijan). There's a massive pack of dangerous 2.5ers, including the top seed of the event, right behind them.

Check It Out: <firebyrd> that was beautiful technique. To pull that off in a real tournament games must be rare - mate with two knights using the one extra tempo from the opponents pawn move - great!
Sep-03-09  fhl: Short is a very likely candidate to win this tournament, it seems like he doesn't know how to lose a game anymore.
Sep-03-09  redwhitechess: http://www.indianexpress.com/news/d...

wonder how the game gone.

Sep-04-09  paavoh: Did you you catch this piece of news?

http://www.indianexpress.com/news/d...

Poor Tkachiev! He has played too much recently...

Sep-04-09  kurtrichards: Tkachiev with a drink too many? Tsk...tsk...tsk...
Sep-04-09  Octavia: Eltaj is playing Short in a ruy lopez
Sep-04-09  DCP23: I've seen Tkachiev drunk too. At the Tal Blitz Cup in 2008.

tpstar: That story needs a wittier headline:

"Punch Drunk"
"Blitzed Chess"
"Sleepy Hollow"
"Tipsy Turvy Game"
"V.T. Phone Home"

Sep-04-09  kellmano: In ten seconds, Tkachiev turns from being fairly anonymous to me into one of my favourite players.

Hats off to him.

Talent & Ambition

Sep-04-09  percyblakeney: Not the first incident involving Tkachiev, he also caused the French loss against Azerbaijan in the Olympiad last year:

<France, slated to play Azerbaijan, forfeited on fourth board when GM Vladislav Tkachiev failed to show (some reports say his team has not seen him for several days)>
