many second cast players...
have been appointed here...

Aug-01-20  Sokrates: <botvinnik64> LOL
Aug-01-20  Clemens Scheitz: What kind of atypical players are these, only one draw in the first 50 games ?
Aug-01-20  749770: <botvinnik64> Why cruel? It's not nice to say so, overall White avoided playing "cat and mouse" and shortened processes, not much beyond... The truth is I do not really understand why players at 1000 elo (disturbed assessment) try their luck in such a way, maybe they should practice a bit previous...
Aug-02-20  wordfunph: good luck team Philippines!
Aug-03-20  savage sanctuary: Where's team Mexico? I'm a big fan ever since coming across this

J Gonzalez Garcia vs Speelman, 2006 - conjured up a reminiscence of Torre's "Windmill" nightmare over Lasker, 1925

Aug-04-20  Clemens Scheitz:

Not that anyone care but I do know how to count, when they first publish the results there were no draws in the first two pages. Are they trying to make me look bad? I can do a pretty good job on my own.

J Gonzalez Garcia is playing under the Spanish federation now < santuario salvaje> and ranked about 30 there with an Elo of 2483.

Considering that Mexico is a western nation of about 125 million, the fact that there are only two players on the 2500s and only two on the 2400s seems a little disappointing. Someone should start a program distributing free chess sets and an introductory book to any citizen that is seen resting against a tree under a big sombrero.

Aug-04-20  savage sanctuary: I agree Mr <Scheitz>, chess is officially now a mandatory subject in Armenia, a fingernail of a nation compared to the Mexican Republic. So unfortunate that for recreation time in schools, the boys run to grab a soccer ball and the girls a 'revista de telenovelas', at least that's how it was in the state of Nayarit were I grew up 6 years of my childhood before returning to the States.

I wish something can be done to change that. But realistically there's little hope, the SEP (Secretaría de Educación Púbica) is only interested in funding 'Taller de Ajedrez' to a minimum.

In shorter words... "Keep kickin' that balón paisa and don't pay them wooden figures any mind"

Aug-05-20  Pedro Fernandez: <<Sokrates>: Impressive array of amateur players. I hope they are having fun with games like this one: Mohamed Ali Samiro vs Hao Io Lao, 2020>

You know, my great <Sokrates>, I was thinking: What would Capablanca think if at five years of age he had witnessed that game?

Aug-06-20  savage sanctuary: Maria Pradi Ramos Donaire vs Ashley Todd, 2020

Did anyone explain to little Ashley that it's an Olympiad, not giveaway chess??

Aug-06-20  Octavia: yous are all jealous because you are not taking part !!! It's nice that the basic amateur players are getting a first shot
Aug-06-20  savage sanctuary: Not jealous at all sir (or ma'am), I'm a basic amateur player and my play looks better than a major chess software malfunction - which is that game
Aug-06-20  jith1207: I keep reading Kibitzers here exclaiming, "Wow, is this FIDE Olympiad?????!!!!!" (usually followed by plenty of question marks and exclamation symbols.

ChessBomb website even took it to a greater extent by applying RED color theme to this tournament page making all moves look in red color, as if they're supposed to be blunders, by default.

So, let me set this record straight, once and for all...

<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<< By now, <CG.com> Kibitzers should've figured it out that this is NOT the REAL CHESS OLYMPIAD where famous GMs and IMs from different countries usually produce some awesome games, unexpected results, exciting race for the top places with very fine climactic rounds and finish.

This FIDE Online Olympiad is more like a collection of Patzer Members of Chess.com representing each country for a namesake Olympiad, that blasphemizes all the 12 Greek Gods, who reside in the Mount Olympus. >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>

Aug-06-20  savage sanctuary: <jith1207>

Hmmm... I don't know,

<FIDE Online Olympiad (2020) The FIDE Online Olympiad is a <<major>> online chess event for national teams that runs July 25-August 30, 2020 on the Chess.com server. <<163 teams and over 1,500 participants from all over the world>> are playing.>

Sounds pretty serious to me. Whats got us puzzled is why some members from these national teams are playing horrendously bad. Could covid have gotten to them?? They should push for immediate testing.

Aug-08-20  Ilkka Salonen: Finland fails to even field a team! What is going on? I think in many cases playing conditions could be subpar due to factors such as connection problems, malware and harrasment of various kinds or just annoyances of urban environment such as rennovation noises, poor air quality etc. In chess tournaments players usually stay at same hotels, and it diminishes risk of conditions favoring some players and being more of a hindrance to others. There could be something done to standardize conditions in online events too.
Aug-08-20  Octavia: i think its great that Fide decided to let the lowest teams play first. In each section (5 in all) all teams play each other & in the end the best 3 move up to the next level - correct?

Some of the players have never played online before & others have never played a stronger player than their parents. So, of course, they make lots of mistakes - so what? It's nice that they're allowed to play. Some of them will study chess seriously & come back next time stronger.

Aug-11-20  waustad: Some of the howlers I see remind me of games I’ve played in the bar, taking all comers.
Aug-17-20  Octavia: Keti Arakhamia got 11/12 ! She lost no games & drew only 2! Marvelous as ever!
Aug-17-20  jith1207: <Keti Arakhamia got 11/12 ! She lost no games & drew only 2>

If she drew twice, wouldn't that be 11/13?

Or is it 11.5/12?

Anyway, that's a great event for Keti.

10 wins + 2 draws = 10*1 + 2*0.5 = 11, so I'm not understanding your point.
Aug-17-20  jith1207: You're right, thanks <beatgiant>. I was writing in half sleep, should've sobered up
Aug-20-20  Nosnibor: Why is Giri doing so badly? After 5 games he has three losses, one draw and one solitary win despite being the highest rated player in this event.
