European Championship (Women) (2013) |
The 14th European Women's Championship was a 168-player 11-round Swiss tournament played at the Metropol Palace hotel in Belgrade, Serbia, 23 July - 3 August 2013, with a day for rest on 30 July (after Round 7). It was organized by the Serbian Chess Federation and "Centar za razboj saha" Belgrade, under the auspices of the European Chess Union. The first 14 players would qualify for the next World Championship tournament. Time control: 90 minutes for the first 40 moves, then 30 more minutes for the whole game, with 30 seconds added per move from move 1. The order of players that finished with the same number of points was determined by the application of tiebreak rules (no playoff matches). Prize fund: 60,000 euros. First prize 10,500, 2nd prize 8,250, 3rd prize 6,500 euros. Tournament director: Jasna Sakotic. Chief arbiter: Sava Stoisavljevic. Play began each day at 3:30 pm (Round 11 at 1:30 pm). Number of games played: 922. Hoang Thanh Trang won with 9/11, a full point ahead of Salome Melia (2nd on tiebreak), Lilit Mkrtchian (3rd on tiebreak) and four others (with 8/11). Excluding those that were not already qualified (Stefanova and Anna Muzychuk), the first 14 players (by average rating of opponents for those with 7.5/11) qualified for participation in the Women's World Championship Knockout Tournament (2015) (originally scheduled for October 2014). Aug-01-13 | | notyetagm: <Octavia: ... Does anyone know how many women play in the open Olympiad?
>
Off the top of my head I think that <JUDIT POLGAR> is the only woman who plays in the Open Olympiad. I follow women's chess and she is the *only* top female player who does that I can think of. There may be other women who play in the Open, but they would be much, much weaker players than Polgar. All the other top female players (Hou Yifan, Ju Wenjun, Zhao Xue, Nana Dzagnidze, Anna Ushenina, Anna Muzychuk, Humpy Koneru, etc.) all play for their women's national team. Maybe <POGONINA>, who has actually *played* in an Olympiad, would be a better person to answer your question. :-) |

Aug-01-13
 | | alexmagnus: Didn't Zhu Chen play in an Open Olympiad for Qatar? |
Aug-01-13 | | Nerwal: <Does anyone know how many women play in the open Olympiad? > I remember vaguely a talk that there were three women playing at the last Open Olympiads. That would be Judit Polgar playing for Hungary, Arakhamia-Grant for Scotland and Elizabeth Manuel playing for Palau, Micronesia. Apart from that, Pia Cramling and Antoaneta Stefanova have played the Open Olympiads, and of course Chantal Chaudé de Silans at Dubrovnik 1950, the first one to do so. Probably there are more... |
Aug-01-13
 | | alexmagnus: To answer my own question: she did. At least 2006 on the 3rd board (scored 7/13 for a 2424 TPR). |
Aug-01-13
 | | alexmagnus: <and Elizabeth Manuel playing for Palau, Micronesia> Which was probably the worst player this tournament ever witnessed. |
Aug-01-13 | | Octavia: Keti gained hers in 2008 @ the OPEN Olympiad in Dresden. She & Judit are not the only women playing in the open! btw since Fide made women have teams of 4, the same as men, there are more women playing in the Olympiads: Whenever a woman plays in the 'mens' team you have to deduct a man & add a woman. Scotland sent 6 women & 4 men! However, you will still see a lot more men float around the Olympiad since most of the team captains & trainers are male. Considering that the general public still thinks its a man's game, its nice to think that Fide supports women in this way. |
Aug-01-13 | | Octavia: <Which was probably the worst player this tournament ever witnessed.> i expect that you're not asked to play in an Olympiad & therefore the sour grapes are showing. Its important that more women get to play, not just the most brill |
Aug-01-13
 | | alexmagnus: E. Manuel played at very low level, surely below 1000 (I'd give it some 650). And it's not sour grapes. I just wonder how it happens that they couldn't find anything better in Palau - a country with 20,000 inhabitants. Any averagely talented beginner would have done better than her. |
Aug-01-13
 | | alexmagnus: Or do you think a random beginner would play it worse? E Manuel vs Ali Layth Ahmed Ahmed, 2012 |

I thought that maybe Stefanova played for the Bulgarian men's team but I was not sure. |
Aug-01-13 | | HSOL: Octavia, you're wrong about more women than men due to the fact there are a lot more teams in the Open section than in the Women's section of the Olympiads. Or did you mean after they changed to 4 boards + 1 reserve in both sections, there are a lot more women than before? I might be wrong, but I have a vague recollection that Cmilyte has played in the Open section? |
Aug-01-13 | | Octavia: <a country with 20,000 inhabitants> is very little when it comes to chess! I'm sure there are other very basic players @ Olympiads, but I don't want to waste my time looking for their games! It would be interesting to know if she got any tuition from the other players. |
Aug-02-13 | | waustad: HSOL Try olimpbase. She played board 3 in 2010 and scored +2. The player search gives multiple countries but doesn't help much for people like Cmilyte, Moser or Cramling who have played for both teams. |
Aug-02-13 | | waustad: Sorry, that was +1. This is harder to do on a tablet. |
Aug-02-13 | | Octavia: <HSOL> you're right - there are still many more open teams then women's. May be more countries could be persuaded to send women's teams |
Aug-02-13 | | nescio: <Octavia: [...] e.g. does anyone gain a norm of IM/GM in Belgrade? Being able to gain norms this way shows how many more highly graded women there are these days.> Probably true. The official sie mentions that Salome Melia has achieved a second GM norm after 9 rounds. I'm not familiar with the exact requirements and I don't know why they are sure of this when there are still two rounds to play, but I imagine she is very close to the title. |
Aug-02-13 | | niemzo: You need 9 games for a norm. So a tournament doesn't need to be completed if it's longer. She could lose both games and the 9 games would count as a 9 game tournament and give her the norm. WGM Pogonina seems to have 9 lives in this tournament. Got away from a number of questionable positions. Maybe she has some feline as an ancestor:) This shows persistence and a great attitude towards the game, if you ask me. Also, you should all follow her on twitter. |

Aug-02-13 | | notyetagm: European Individual Women's Championship (2013) Tomorrow's final round:
Board 1: Hoang vs Cmilyte
Board 2: Socko vs Melia
After her clutch win today with Black on Board 1 against Kosteniuk to take a full point lead, Hoang Thanh Trang will be the new European Women's champion *unless* she loses and Melia wins. Then I think Melia wins the tiebreak. So if Hoang wins or drawn tomorrow, the title is definitely hers. |

Damn, Gunina should get a special award for playing <FIGHTING CHESS>: no draws after 10 rounds! She is <+7 =0 -3>.
European Individual Women's Championship (2013)/Valentina Gunina |
Aug-03-13 | | niemzo: GM Hoang managed to draw and won the tournament! She had a rather cagey position all game, but what do you expect when you play the Tromp(I hate it). |
Aug-03-13 | | waustad: If you look back at comments for the last olympiad, there was a fair amount of discussion about women who played on open teams if I recall. Olimpbase player search defaults to listing the open team for players who have played in both. A player who has only played on the women's team will indicate that team. |
Aug-03-13 | | nescio: <notyetagm: [...] Damn, Gunina should get a special award for playing <FIGHTING CHESS>: no draws after 10 rounds!> I don't think people who are too stubborn to accept the inevitable should be specially awarded. If she had drawn her 4 losses she could have won the tournament. Look what happened today.
Mkrtchian-Gunina, position after 66.Bd8
click for larger viewBlack will lose h4 but will be able to pick up a2 (66...Nf2+ 67.Ke2 Ne4, and ...Nc3+), with about an equal game. Instead Gunina completely self-destructed: 66...Nc3 67.a3 Ne4 68.Be7+ Kd5 69.axb4 Ke6 70.Bxh4 and she resigned at the 79th. |
