Oct-29-12  parmetd: Refused. What you are describing is accelerated pairings which is what elmochess asked about.
Oct-29-12  Refused: Thanks didn't know what this way of pairing is called.
Oct-29-12  Refused: Oh anyway, from round 1 I can highly recommend

V Dzhangobegov vs D Khismatullin, 2012

That is really an entertaining game. But I am a bit afraid it will go unnotice since Shirov was not involved.

Oct-29-12  Strongest Force: Didn't. Lasker say chess & life was worthy of our best fight? If you have a storm in your life keep praying and fighting and you will make it. Go Negi!
Oct-29-12  brankat: <Strongest Force>

"It is too beautiful to spend your life upon. Many times have I managed to break with Chess, yet I have always fallen in love with it again. I was too captivated by the conflict between ideas and opinions, attack and defence, life and death."

<Emanuel Lasker>

Oct-29-12  waustad: Oh. I thought that they cut the field in half and did usual Swiss pairings on the top half and the bottom half separately. That way the top player is playing somebody from the 75 percentile and the bottom player is playing somebody from the 25 percentile.
Oct-29-12  waustad: No. Shirov played player 171 in the first round. They did a normal Swiss pairing using the whole field.
Oct-29-12  waustad: I suspect that the source of confusion is that the first games we saw here were from the second round.
Oct-29-12  waustad: Anestasia Bodnaruk is now at 2.5/3 and tomorrow plays her 3rd consecutive GM. If she keeps at it, there may be a norm available. She's have to stay near the top of the table to keep getting titled players and would have to do well against them. The rules are arcane. http://www.fide.com/component/handb...
Oct-30-12  Strongest Force: <Brankat>, thx for that quote. I am reminded of the hare-turtle race. The turtle stayed focused & struggled against impossible odds...you never know.

Troller: Hmmm. Shirov, Akopian and Eljanov have all won just 1 game each and drawn 2 so far against something like 2200-2400-rated opposition.
Oct-30-12  Shams: <Strongest Force> <I am reminded of the hare-turtle race. The turtle stayed focused & struggled against impossible odds...you never know.>

I'm sorry to have to tell you this, but the turtle recently admitted to blood doping.

Oct-30-12  SetNoEscapeOn: <Shams>

lol!

Oct-30-12  Strongest Force: <Shams>. "Mr. T" was caught doping but he wasn't a dope: after the race he did shows like Letterman, The View, & Good Morning America; ESPN signed him to a 5 year contract (animal race commentator); and so, he "got over" like a "phat rat".
Nov-01-12  blade2012: Who is the photographer of these amazing pictures?

Nov-03-12  waustad: A bit of warning, the final round Sunday starts 4 hours earlier. Of course DST ends tonight too, just to complicate it even more.
Nov-03-12  dx9293: Lenderman defeats Shirov and is tied for the lead!
Nov-03-12  Strongest Force: Yes, <Dx9293>, it is good to have a New Yorker in first place.
Nov-03-12  waustad: Demchenko is another of the 8 players tied at 6.5 going into the final round. With a 2759 performance rating so far his 3rd GM norm seems to be nearly done. In the final round he is white against Grachev.
Nov-03-12  Refused: Wow, has anybody noted we haven't seen a single post about the awesomeness of Wesley So in this thread?

Anyway interesting tournament, with some interesting games in it. Best of luck to IM Demchenko to crown his fine performance with a win, his final GM and maybe tournament victory.

Nov-03-12  waustad: One player who has had an interesting tournament is WIM Kateryna Dolzhykova, who was playing way above her rating at +3 until she met Eljanov in the 6th round. This started a string of 3 losses. In any case, she had a win and two draws against GMs and a win against an IM that she can look back on with pride.
Nov-03-12  Mendrys: <Refused: Wow, has anybody noted we haven't seen a single post about the awesomeness of Wesley So in this thread> He isn't even in this tournament. Why is it of note that he hasn't been mentioned?

That didn't help the Blitz World Championship thread at all.

Nov-04-12  whiteshark: "The traditional Chigorin Memorial is underway in St. Petersburg, Russia, and includes a plethora of very strong players, including four rated 2700, the most famous of whom is Mr. Fire-on-the-Board Shirov. < It also includes a typical Russian oddity: a high-rated non-GM: <IM Anton Demchenko <>>, rated 2610, and tied for first with an impressive 2800 performance.>"

Nov-04-12  whiteshark: Congrats to <Alexander Areshchenko> winning the Chigorin Memorial with 7.5/9! on tie breaks
