Adams 2663 - Czopor 2434
Pert 2409 - Roberson 2440
On paper (rating difference) you have to fancy Adams to win with a possible tie break v Vitiugov. Pert v Roberson tough to call. There are nine players on 5½ if the above three all draw then we could have a six or seven player tie break. That sounds like fun. |

Um....could Adams have won more championships if the fastidious British sports authorities had presented Mickey with decent appearance fees over the years? That would encourage more participation. I suppose the budget for footballers would then have had to be cut by .0000001% but really, I think chess is worth the sacrifice. |

Appearance Fees?
I know there was a kerfuffle regarding them just after the great shift in the rules as to who can play in the British Championship. At one time any player in the British Commonwealth could play but after Indian players won it back to back in 2002 and 2003 it was decided this event did not serve British Chess (for British Chess read - English Chess). So in a effort to get normal service resumed i.e. an English British Champion it was open to players from Britain only.
Unfortunately (depending on your POV) Rowson won it three times on the trot. It was around about here after his third win the rumour of miserable or no appearance fees surfaced. After Rowson's triple hit the title was won in 2007 by another Scot, Jacob McAagaard, who at that time was registered to play for Scotland. (Rowson was 2nd=) Having kicked out the commonwealth players the English Chess Fed were no doubt hoping Scotland would gets it's Independence so they could bar them as well. More rumours of disputes over appearance fees surfaced. In 2008 neither Rowson or McAagaard played in the event. (a joint boycott? more rumours, but by now regarding app fees you could be excused for thinking of no smoke without fire. https://www.ecforum.org.uk/viewtopi... indicate something was going on. ) Blessed joy returned in 2008 with dancing on England's green and pleasant land when Conquest won it (in Liverpool where he nearly won it again). Since then it has been English players winning it. (However, Cornwall was not part of 1707 Act of Union that created Great Britain. So officially Mickey is not English and therefore not British. He should not have been allowed to play.) |
