Corus Group A (2000)

The inaugural Corus tournament (which resulted when the main sponsor Hoogovens merged with British Steel) was held in Wijk aan Zee, the Netherlands from January 15 (Round 1) to January 30 (Round 13). Rest days: January 17, 21 and 26. Fourteen top grandmasters, including the world champion Garry Kasparov, competed in a round robin format in the prestigous A event. The participants were (in order of Elo): Garry Kasparov (Elo ranked as #1 in the world), Viswanathan Anand (#2), Vladimir Kramnik (#3), Alexander Morozevich (#5), Peter Leko (#6), Michael Adams (#7), Nigel Short (#15), Viktor Korchnoi (#28), Predrag Nikolic (#29), Judit Polgar (#30), Jan Timman (#32), Loek van Wely (#35), Jeroen Piket (#43), and Smbat Lputian (#79). Kasparov won his second Wijk aan Zee tournament in a row, undefeated with 9.5/13.
