Chessgames.com Chess Event Description
Linares (2005)

The 22nd Torneo Internacional de Ajedrez Ciudad de Linares was played 23 February to 10 March, 2005 in Hotel Anibal, Linares, Spain. The participants were Garry Kasparov (Elo ranked #1 in the world), Viswanathan Anand (#2), Veselin Topalov (#3), Peter Leko (#5), Michael Adams (#6), Vallejo Pons (#18), and FIDE World Champion Rustam Kasimdzhanov (#24), who had unexpectedly won the FIDE World Championship Knockout Tournament (2004). The PCA World Champion Vladimir Kramnik (#4) did not take part. The prize money pot was significantly higher than in previous years, with 100,000 euros to the winner and 75,000 to the runner-up. Games started 3:30 pm. Time control: 2 hours 40 moves + 1 hour 20 moves + 30 minutes.

Before the last round, Kasparov was leading by one point, but Topalov won their individual game and leveled the score. They shared the 175,000 euros, but Kasparov was declared the winner based on a new 2nd tie-break criterion: most Black wins (two versus one).

Mar-15-05  meloncio: <acirce> Dos Hermanas is a city beside Sevilla, my hometown. It's the typical 'dormitory-town', and they always wanted to compete against Linares Tournament, but for some reason they couldn't get it.

BTW, Dos Hermanas = Two Sisters, a peculiar name for a town.

Mar-15-05  acirce: <meloncio> Are you planning to be there and watch? Oh, and I noticed a mistake in my post -- the Leko-Adams rapid match is not until after Sofia.
Mar-15-05  meloncio: <acirce> Yes, I'll go there two or three times at least; it's only a 15-minutes short ride by car.

Miguel Illescas-Cordoba is the present Spanish Chess Champion; he was our number one until Paco Vallejo arose up.

Mar-15-05  poktirity: Dos bocadillos con queso for favor. Los banos arabes es muy bonito.

One year of Spanish studying summed up in two sentences.

Mar-15-05  meloncio: <poktirity> Pretty well, but only two sentences in one year? At least I hope you like cheese sandwiches :-D

And <only if you don't know it> for bano/baño, use ñ=Alt+164, or Ñ=Alt+165.

Mar-16-05  poktirity: <meloncio> Didn't know that, thanks alot! Hasta mañana. Y agua mineral. :D

Cambiones cisterna muy bonito ;)

Mar-16-05  azaris: I notice the Chess.FM Brilliancy Price has gone to one Garry of Kaspar, and it's a whopping $400!

"Nice career Garry, here's some chump change."

offramp: It's a bit like when baseball fans save up and club together to give their favourite top player a retirement gift.
Mar-16-05  azaris: <offramp> When someone retires it's nice to pass the hat around, but they should have used a bigger hat!

offramp: I do think it is nice of chess.fm to do it, especially if they have that money spare, and Kasparov certainly won't say no.

Kasparov is the kind of guy that always checks the 'returned change' chute as he passes phone boxes.

Mar-16-05  Franz the Stampede: <You mean next time they'll invite Azmaparaishvili?>

so LOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOL :D :D :D

Mar-16-05  PinkPanther: <acirce>
There is nothing to watch, Dos Hermanas takes place over the internet.

Mar-16-05  Saruman: <lostemperor> Or; Maiazperishvillain!

  lostemperor: I got that, LOL.
Mar-16-05  hintza: <PinkPanther> Aside from the internet tournament there is actually an over-the-board event too.
Mar-30-05  JustAFish: Does anyone know which games took home the "official" and "chess.fm" brilliancy prizes?
Apr-13-05  VishyFan: is it just me, or everybody has got complimentary "Ciudad de Linares" key chains........ for the official prediction contest.......

anybody has got any other prizes?

Apr-13-05  you vs yourself: <vishyfan> I got a complimentary chess board signed by Adams from the last game when he kicked Vishy's ass. Also, I got a complimentary Leko's key chain that reads: "Just draw."
Apr-21-05  acirce: Ivanov: <Theoretical survey of the Linares tournament> http://www.e3e5.com/eng/petersburg/...

Some interesting stuff.

Apr-25-05  alexandrovm: <JustAFish> it was the game between Kasparov and Kazim.
Apr-25-05  Caissanist: Hmm, where's the link to this page? I only see it when it pops up in the list of recent kibitzes.
Apr-25-05  iron maiden: Look on the homepage, under the "New Games" column.
Jun-08-05  coolchess: A disaster the participation of the "FIDE CHAMPION" Kasimdzhanov, a really disaster, he has proved at least for me he is a lucky champion, and that donesnt have the strenght to win big tournaments.
Jun-08-05  stijn: he was not just a lucky champion, the players in linares were just stronger than the ones he faced in tripoli last year. And classical chess is probably not his strongest point. He seems to be playing better in rapid and sem-rapid games like the ones in tripoli.
