The 22nd Torneo Internacional de Ajedrez Ciudad de Linares was played 23 February to 10 March, 2005 in Hotel Anibal, Linares, Spain. The participants were Garry Kasparov (Elo ranked #1 in the world), Viswanathan Anand (#2), Veselin Topalov (#3), Peter Leko (#5), Michael Adams (#6), Vallejo Pons (#18), and FIDE World Champion Rustam Kasimdzhanov (#24), who had unexpectedly won the FIDE World Championship Knockout Tournament (2004). The PCA World Champion Vladimir Kramnik (#4) did not take part. The prize money pot was significantly higher than in previous years, with 100,000 euros to the winner and 75,000 to the runner-up. Games started 3:30 pm. Time control: 2 hours 40 moves + 1 hour 20 moves + 30 minutes. Before the last round, Kasparov was leading by one point, but Topalov won their individual game and leveled the score. They shared the 175,000 euros, but Kasparov was declared the winner based on a new 2nd tie-break criterion: most Black wins (two versus one). | Jun-08-05 | | stijn: he was not just a lucky champion, the players in linares were just stronger than the ones he faced in tripoli last year. And classical chess is probably not his strongest point. He seems to be playing better in rapid and sem-rapid games like the ones in tripoli. |
