The first in a planned series of three international chess master tournaments held in the coastal town of Ostend, Belgium was conducted at the local casino from June 12th to July 18th, 1905. Fourteen chess masters were invited to participate in the double round robin event, including major participants and earlier winners of the Monte Carlo tournament series of the previous four years. The best of these players included David Janowski, Geza Maróczy, Siegbert Tarrasch, and Carl Schlechter. As he did in Monte Carlo (1902) and Monte Carlo (1904), Maróczy was clear first with an impressive 19½/26, a full point and a half over shared second place Janowski and Tarrasch. Schlechter placed fourth and Georg Marco and Richard Teichmann shared fifth place (incidentally making this another tournament to contribute to Teichmann's nickname of "Richard the Fifth"). Maróczy's win here along with previous international victories made him a serious contender for a world championship match with Emanuel Lasker, but problems organizing the match in Cuba caused the arrangements to fall through, and Maróczy soon after retired from chess for over a decade. In addition to the foregoing, special awards were made for the games mentioned below:
150 francs to F.J. Marshall (Marshall vs. Burn); 100 francs to C. Schlechter (Schlechter vs. Janowski); 100 francs to G. Maroczy (Maroczy vs. Leonhardt); 100 francs to Dr. S. Tarrasch (Maroczy vs. Tarrasch); 50 francs to R. Teichmann (Teichmann vs. Tschigorin); 50 francs to G. Marco (Wolf vs. Marco); 50 francs to P.S. Leonhardt (Leonhardt vs. Tarrasch); 50 francs to A. Burn (Tschigorin vs. Burn); 50 francs to S. Alapin (Alapin vs. Marshall). |

"Time limit: The first twenty moves in one hour and twenty minutes; afterwards, fifteen moves per hour. Five games to be played weekly, Wednesday being reserved for playing off of unfinished games."

"Quite a novel time limit has been adopted, the result of which will be to hasten the play during the earlier portion of the game, at least as compared to the regulation at Cambridge Springs, and other tournaments. At Ostend the rule will call for the first twenty moves to be made within an hour and twenty minutes, after which play must be conducted at the rate of fifteen moves each hour."

Odd time control that one. One hour 20 minutes for the first 20 moves. I think all tournament reports should, if possible, add the time controls because they were not all standard and it may help explain some errors or odd moves at particular points in the game. Thanks Again, Geoff |
