8 Tips to Become a Better Chess Player:

01) Know The Rules: Light square on the lower right corner for each player, Queen on her color facing the opposing Queen, the White army always moves first, Castle the unmoved King two squares sideways and then bring the unmoved Rook around inside the King, Touch-Move, Priority of Check: 3 responses, En Passant Pawn Capture option, Underpromotion to N+ or R to avoid stalemate, 5 Ways to Draw, How to keep scoresheet and use the time clock -- don't forfeit on time, tournament etiquette, etc.

02) Control of the center is vital. Keep a close eye on the center pawns, advanced pieces, and the f2/f7 squares guarded by the King. King safety is the top priority, but if you lose your mighty queen without compensation, the game will probably be lost. The Rook is often the last piece to move on the back row; usually inward toward the center. Rooks are safest when connected to protect each other with no other pieces between them (or maybe the Queen, since she can move like a Rook). Two Blind Swine gobbling pawns on the opponent's 2nd/7th rank are powerful. Don't obstruct your bishop with your own pawns on the same color in front of your bishop, a self-imposed road block. Long range pieces should seize open lines to extend down the board. Squares/lines that are aimed at more than once are hot spots where the action often ensues. Knights are best within the Big Center (16 squares) and/or blockading the square in front of the opponent's weak pawn. Do not allow penetration of weak squares between/behind your pawns. Avoid weak pawns that cannot be protected by another pawn, requiring a piece to babysit it.

03) Play Lots of Games: Experience builds chess intuition. Generally, use your pieces off the back row more than your pawns. Aim at opposing soldiers to threaten capture, aim at your own for protection.

04) Learn from Your Games: Review completed games w/an experienced player. See computer analysis. Reduce, eliminate your mistakes in the future.

05) Practice Solving Chess Puzzles: Become GREAT at finding tactics, especially double attacks!

06) Study Basic Endgames: K&Ps, K&Ns, K&Bs, K&Rs, K&Q, etc.

07) Learn Common Traps and Checkmates in your Favorite Openings: Don't get ambushed in the beginning! The center pawn fork trick is very common. Can you prevent Scholar's Mate from happening to your King?

08) Double-Check Your Moves BEFORE You Move: The main way games are lost is not seeing/preventing what your opponent will do next. Ask yourself "Will this move be safe on this square? Will it leave behind something unprotected? Are my other pieces sufficiently protected? Can my opponent add/pile upon current targets w/an extra attacker?" Outnumbering (more attackers than defenders of a square) is a key concept used in chess.
