Jan-17-23
 | | MissScarlett: I bet everyone that Magnus doesn't turn up to play tomorrow. |
Jan-17-23 | | Damenlaeuferbauer: Anish Giri is in top form and had good vibes! |
Jan-17-23
 | | Penguincw: First classical win vs. Carlsen since 2011, also at Tata Steel. And wouldn't you know it - the date was also Jan/17. |
Jan-17-23 | | OrangeTulip: Great game by Giri! |
Jan-17-23 | | Messiah: Ouch! :-) |
Jan-17-23 | | fisayo123: After so many tries , this was bound to happen. Beliavsky scored the odd win against Karpov once every blue moon. So did Short against Kasparov. Same thing here. |
Jan-17-23 | | fisayo123: Congrats to Anish of course! He played pretty much perfectly. Very clean win. |
Jan-17-23 | | crazyim5: Jan 17th seems to be Anish's special day! :) |
Jan-17-23 | | Ninas Husband: <MissScarlett> <I bet everyone that Magnus doesn't turn up to play tomorrow.> And then he'll accuse Giri of cheating! :) |
Jan-17-23 | | Ninas Husband: This game is just BEGGING for a GIF of Austin Powers saying, "Oh no! I've lost me MOJO!" :) |
Jan-17-23 | | NrthrnKnght: OMG carlsen lost... giri HAD to have cheated.. |

Jan-18-23 | | wordfunph: watta game |

Jan-18-23
 | | perfidious: White always seemed to be one step ahead in this tilt, very much in the manner of his great adversary. |

Jan-18-23 | | Refused: Yeah, that line is a pain in the neck for QID players. Better prepared player has an edge there. And Giri is one of the best prepared players. Major branch in this line is one move 12...
Black can go for either 12...g6 or like Carlsen did go for 12...d6 (just don't play 12...0-0 as that's 1-0). 18.Ne5 is an interesting choice. My somewhat dated theory gives 18.Bg5 Nc2 19.Re7 with an unclear position. e.g. Carlsen-Pelletier, 2008. continued with 19...Bxf3 20.Bxf3 Bxg5 21.Rxd7 Rd8 22.Rxd8+ Bxd8 23.Rd1 Nd4. With a slight edge for white.
My guess is Carlsen intended to go with 19...Bxe7 20.Bxe7+ Kg8 21.Rd1 which is a total mess, but the engines favor Black. |
Jan-18-23 | | paavoh: Poor/unfortunate opening choice by Black, perhaps? |
Jan-18-23 | | Ulhumbrus: After 17 Nc3 Black stands worse. Yet he tries to attack by 17...Nb4. The attack is unsound and will increase Black's disadvantage with best play. Instead of this 17...g6 prepares to connect the rooks before trying to do anything else. The sequel suggests that following the unsound attacking move Black refuses to repent of his sin but persists in pursuing what is an unsound attack and so increases White's advantage to a winning degree. Giri played well enough to refute Carlsen's attempt to start an unsound attack. |

Jan-18-23
 | | alexmagnus: This makes Giri the second (after Caruana) player younger than Carsen to beat Carlsen twice or more in classical games. |
Jan-18-23 | | Messiah: Somehow this game reminds me of the Star Trek TNG episode <The Child>. |
Jan-19-23 | | goodevans: Nice pun! |
Jan-19-23
 | | OhioChessFan: Amusing pun. |
Jan-19-23 | | OrangeTulip: Strange pun, not respectful, in my eyes |
