HAROLD SAUNDERS
(born Sep-04-1876, died Jul-13-1950, 73 years old) Canada (federation/nationality United Kingdom)

[what is this?]

Harold Saunders was born in 1876 in Montreal, Canada, as the eighth of eleven children of Rebecca (1837-1929) and Alexander Saunders (1835-1916). Some time before 1891, most of the family moved to London, England. Alexander was a jeweller, whereas Harold established himself as a stockbroker. Harold married in 1923 to Rachel Ansell (1880-1965), and lived thereafter at Phoenix Lodge Mansions, Hammersmith, London. He was champion of the Hampstead Chess Club (London) in 1910, 1911 and 1912, 2nd at London (1913), 4th at Cheltenham (1913), =7th at Hastings Minor (1919), =7th at Malvern College (1921), 5th at Southport (1924), =5th at Hastings B (1924), 9th at Stratford-upon-Avon (1925), 5th at Edinburgh (1926), =3rd at London (1926), 4th at Scarborough B (1926), 9th at Scarborough (1927), =4th at Scarborough (1928), =7th at Tenby (1928), =1st at Scarborough (1929), and champion of the City of London Chess Club in 1931. His father, and two of his older brothers, Edward Saunders and Ernest Saunders, were also competitive chess players.

Tabanus: From the "Patterson family tree":

1877: Birth abt 1877 • Montreal, Canada

1879: Birth of Sister Neomi Saunders abt 1879 • Montreal, Canada

1881: Birth of Brother Raphael Saunders abt 1881 • Montreal, Canada

1884: Birth of Sister Marguerite Constance 'Dorothy 'Gertrude' 'Daisy' Saunders (1884–1965) 2 Jan 1884 • Canada

1891: Residence • Paddington London, England, as son in the house.

We find this family in Canada in 1881 (census):

<1881: Alexander Saunders, 42, born in England, English origin, hebrew, merchant. Married to Rebecca, 35, born in England. Children: Dora 16, Ada 12, Edward, 11, Herman 9, Lily 8, Ernest, 6, <Harry 4>, Naomi 2, Raphael 1, all born in "Q" or "2", living in St. Antoine Ward, Montreal>,

in England in 1891 (census):

<1891: Alexander Saunders, 56, born in Kempen Germany, living on own means. Married to Rebecca, 53, naturalized British subject (this may belong to the line above, i. e. to Alexander) London. Children: Dora 27, Adah 22, Herman 19, Lilly 18, <Harold 14>, Naomi 12, Raphael 10, Berthe [?, hard to read] 9, all children born in Montreal Canada. The five oldest children are "living on own means", the four youngest are "Scholar". Family living in St Mary Paddington, District 19, London>,

and in 1911 (census):

<1911: Alexander Saunders, 76, retired, born in Germany, nat. English. Married to Rebecca, 73, born in England. Children: Edward 41, single, Dyer [?), <Harold 33>, Stockbroker, Raphael 31, Stockbroker, Gertrude 29. Living (with four servants) in Paddington North, 117 Sutherland Avenue, London>.

Like their father Alexander, the brothers Edward and Ernest (see 1881) became jewellers and chess players. (The 1871 census has Alexander as jeweller in Montreal, and see Ernest Saunders.) The two were left in Canada when the family moved to London before 1891. I'll try to dig up more proof later, but post also this for reference:

<Saunders Rebecca of 37 Buckland-crescent Hampstead Middlesex widow died 14 August 1929 Probate London 14 September to <Harold Saunders> and Raphael Saunders stockbrokers. Effects L11471 15s. 5 d. Resworn LL7285 19s. 4d.> (Index of Wills).

The Times, 16 Aug 1929 says Rebecca was the widow of Alexander Saunders, and Buckland-crescent is very near to Marylebone.

Tabanus: Hastings and St Leonards Observer, 2 May 1931, p. 11:

<Congratulations to Mr. Harold Saunders on winning the championship of the City of London Chess Club. He is placed first in a final round after a triple tie between himself, Buerger and Newman. This is his first victory and a very popular one too. Mr. Saunders has belonged to clubs in Birmingham and Manchester, and has also played chess in South Africa. A fortnight ago he played top board for the London Stock Exchange against Amsterdam.> Not him?

Apr-17-16  luftforlife: <Tab>: Just so we know, Harold Saunders was not the father of Elaine Zelia Saunders, later Elaine Saunders Pritchard. Please see her entry for more information.

Tabanus: <luft> Ah yes, Henry de Beaufort Saunders. I saw the "H. de B." in a newspaper and wondered about that.

Wikipedia has Harold Saunders d. 13 July 1950. Here's the probate:

<Saunders Harold of 2 Phoenix Lodge-mansions Brook Green London W.6 and of 1/4 Cophall-chambers London E.C. died 13 July 1950 at 2 Phoenix Lodge-mansions Probate London 31 August to Rachel Saunders widow.>

The British Phone Books have a Harold Saunders living at <27> Phoenix Lodge-mansions every year from 1927 until 1950.

Cophall-chambers read <Copthall>-chambers. Whatever that is!

Tabanus: On Raphael Saunders (b. 1881, youngest brother of Harold):

Raphael Saunders, b. ca. 1881, stockbroker, arriving from Beira, Mozambique to London 5 May 1930, address 119a Alexandra Road.

<Saunders Raphael D.S.O of Flat 2L Artillery Mansions Victoria Street London S.W.I died 30 April 1965 Probate London 21 June to Stephen Philip Pyke solicitor Harold Worthy Evemy chartered accountant and John David Broomfield stockbrokers manager.>

---

London, England, Electorial registers:

1920: Harold & Raphael living in 117 Sutherland Av. Maida Vale (= place of 1911 census for Alex & Rebecca Saunders + children).

1921, 1922, 1923: Harold & Raphael living in 37 Buckland-crescent Hampstead (= place of Rebecca Saunders' death in 1929), as part of "Copthall buildings" in the "Polling District of Coleman Street (L)".

1924, 1926, 1929: Harold & <Rachel Ansell> living in 27 Phoenix Lodge Mansions (and Raphael still in 37 Buckland-crescent)

1931: Harold & Rachel Ansell living in 27 Phoenix Lodge Mansions, and Raphael now in 119a Alexander Rd.

---

Conclusion: the Harold Saunders that died on 13 July 1950, who Wikipedia says is the chess player, is the child of Alexander and Rebecca Saunders, and hence born in 1877 in Montreal, Canada, as the brother of Ernest Saunders.

Apr-18-16  luftforlife: At the 10th British Chess Championship held at Cheltenham, England from August 11 through August 23, 1913, Harold Saunders defeated Reginald Pryce Michell in the third round, and Joseph Henry Blackburne in the fifth round, on his way to a fourth-place finish, with a score of 6.5/12.0. (Sadly, the recorded scores for these two games appear to be fragmentary.)

John Saunders: Very interesting and convincing researches. Can I firstly state that I am not in any way connected with Harold Saunders or his family. I am not related to any known chess-players called Saunders, alive or dead.

I have followed through much of the information posted here about Harold Saunders and have come to the same conclusion as others that the Harold Saunders who died on 13 July 1950, and who took part in various high-profile chess tournaments in England was the son of Alexander and Rebecca as stated here.

I've looked further and found that Harold's date of birth was 4 September 1876, according to the 1939 Register. I only have preview access to this (via FindMyPast dot com) but it gives his address as 2 Phoenix Mansions, Wolverton Garden, Hammersmith, and says that he was a stockbroker. Living with him was "Richard A Saunders", dob 6 Dec 1880, occ. unpaid dom[estic] du[ties], gender male, but I think this is simply an egregious transcription error for Rachel A Saunders.

The death record in the Times, 15 July 1950, reads: "SAUNDERS.—On July 13, 1950, suddenly, at 2, Phoenix Lodge Mansions. Brook Green. W.6. Harold Saunders, dearly loved husband of Rachel (Daisie), aged 73. Cremation, Mortlake Crematorium. Monday, July 17, at 2.20 p.m. No flowers, by request and, please, no letters."

Tabanus: <John Saunders> Very good. I added the birth date to the bio.

The Devon and Exeter Gazette, 26 March 1912, p. 8:

<Mr. H. Saunders has won the Hampstead Chess Club Championship with 7 wins out of 8, and as this is his third successive win, the trophy which accompanies the title now becomes his own.>

The Morpeth Herald and Reporter, 18 October 1912, p. 10:

<Mr. F. J. Marshall, the distinguished Chess master, gave a simultaneous exhibition recently at the Hampstead Chess Club, where, out of fifteen games played, he won eleven and lost to H. Saunders, the club champion, and three other members.>

John Saunders: Rachel outlived Harold by 15 years: "SAUNDERS Rachel otherwise Rachel Ansell of 66 Gordon Road Ealing Middlesex died 20 January 1965 Probate London 9 March to Raphael Saunders retired stockbroker and Stephen Philip Pyke solicitor. £30503." (A very tidy sum of money) Unfortunately Raphael did not live much longer himself. His entry is only two further down the probate list: "SAUNDERS Raphael D.S.0 of Flat 2L Artillery Mansions Victoria Street London S.W.1 died 30 April 1965 Probate London 21 June to Stephen Philip Pyke solicitor Harold Worthy Evemy chartered accountant and John David Broomfield stockbrokers manager. £57699."

Stonehenge: Is H.E. Saunders the same chap? Dutch newspapers have him playing in Holland-England, The Hague 1914 and in the 1926 British Championship.
May-01-16  luftforlife: <Stonehenge>: Really like your new avatar. :) As noted above, Harold Saunders did compete in the 19th British Championship held at Edinburgh in August 1926; as there was only one Saunders in that tourney, I'd say that entry you found for "H.E. Saunders" refers to Harold Saunders. I can't speak to whether he competed in Holland-England, The Hague, 1914, but I'm glad you mentioned that, and I'll look into it. I'll also check back through <Tab's> research results to search for possible mentions of Harold Saunders's middle name or initial. Kind regards.

Tabanus: I looked at hundred Saunders in the Dutch newspapers, until I found one "H. E. Saunders" in Het nieuws van den dag voor Nederlandsch-Indie :) The British newspapers have H. Saunders of London playing, and the marriage index should have his middle name (if any), but no.
May-01-16  luftforlife: <Stonehenge> <Tab>: Is this the article to which you adverted evincing H.E. Saunders's competition in Holland-England, The Hague, 1914?:

http://resolver.kb.nl/resolve?urn=d....

May-01-16  luftforlife: Here are links to two Dutch newspaper articles evincing the participation of "H.E. Saunders" (who we know to be Harold Saunders) in the 19th British Championship at Edinburgh in August 1926:

http://resolver.kb.nl/resolve?urn=d...

http://resolver.kb.nl/resolve?urn=d...

May-01-16  luftforlife: I apologize for any error: perhaps I should have written "Netherlands-England." I know you're from The Netherlands, <Stonehenge>, so of course I take your usage as correct; I'm just thinking of <sneaky pete's> recent kibitz, written for the benefit of those of us who are not from The Netherlands, on "Holland" versus "The Netherlands": Biographer Bistro (kibitz #13555). And though the article I linked (which both <Stonehenge> and <Tab> found before I did) wrote of "Engeland" versus "Holland," Tony Gillam lists a tournament book from "Netherlands-England, The Hague, 1914." Again, sorry if I erred.
May-01-16  luftforlife: Another Dutch source has "H.E. Saunders" of "Engeland" against "G.S. Fontein" of "Nederlands" in "Match Nederlands-Engeland." Tijdschrift van den Nederlandschen Schaakbond (Hoofdredacteur: W.A.T. Schelfhout, S.W. Weisfelt, Bondssecretaris), 22e Jaargang, No. 4, April 1914, 61-62.
