Aug-16-04  Kaspy2: he gained notority on chess.fm . don't mess with his bishops pair...

Joshka: This guy plays around 400 games per year!!....10k rated tournament games...gotta be the Iron Man of chess hey?:-)...just heard his interview on chess.fm (repeat from 2003) sounds like a really nice guy too.
Sep-14-05  domradave: He is a nice guy!!!

I first met Jay at a simul at the Jamaica, Queens chess club. He crushed my Grufeld defense.

I almost beat him in an English opening a couple of years later in a rated tournament game.

He said nice things about my chess ability.

A nice guy, indeed!

Sep-15-05  Perkins: I was visiting the Polgar Chess Center a few weeks ago, and saw Jay's name on some sort of quad matchup pairings for a tournament that had been recently held. I guess he takes that V train out to Kew Gardens when there arnt enough tournaments in the city.
Jul-10-06  erabin123: I must play Bonin like two times a week. hes a great guy but hes tooo good. i drew him 5 times now but lost to him way too many times.
Jan-26-07  thesonicvision: i overheard him bragging about how
many games he had "published on
chessgames.com" at the 1st
NY Open tournament for '07 (that was
like a month ago).

overall, a nice guy who is very
approachable and social.

Apr-23-07  Brown: This guy is going to kick the @#$%! out of me this Friday at the Marshall. They're putting together a simul to raise money for him to enter the US Championships.

Good to hear that he's a good guy. Haven't met him yet.

Apr-29-07  Brown: Here's my expected loss.

Bonin vs Brown Marshall CC Simul 4/27/07
1.d4 e6 2.Nf3 f5 3.d5 Be7 4.dxe6 dxe6 5.Qxd8 Bxd8 6.Nc3 Nf6 7.h3 Nc6 8.Bf4 0-0 9.e3 Nd5 10.Nxd5 exd5 11.0-0-0 Ne7 12.c4 c6 13.Bd6 Rf6 14.Bxe7 Bxe7 15.cxd5 cxd5 16.Bb5 Rb6 17.Ba4 f4 18.exf4 Bf5 19.Nd4 Rc8+ 20.Bc2 Bxc2 21.Nxc2 Rbc6 22.Rd2 d4 23.Kb1 d3 24.Nd4 Rg6 25.g3 Rd8 26.Nf3 Bb4 27.Rdd1 Rf6 28.Ne5 e2 29.a3 Bc5 30.Rh2 g5 31.Nf3...

And I saw an illusion and played 31...Re1 instead of Re2.

I am sure if he had the time he could have played better, but I am content to have played some interesting moves, like 16...Rb6, 17...f4. I considered on move 21... the moves Bb4 and Bf6 as well, but saw them to be roughly equal to pushing the d-pawn.

Thanks for any feedback! Good luck in your games.

May-17-07  dx9293: Three rounds into the US Championship, and Jay has three draws against strong GMs! A. Ivanov, Gulko, and Browne!
Jul-07-08  Riverbeast: Happy Birthday to the Bone!

hansj: How come there isnt more research on Jay Bonin. Surely he has set an all time record for winning most tournaments? I worked out that he had played more than 15000 tournament games since 1990!
Feb-14-13  Strongest Force: Jay toldĀ me he played his first rated game ever against me. If anyone wants to know who I am, just ask Jay.
Jan-23-14  dx9293: Bonin beat Alexander Shabalov yet again, this time in Round 1 of Foxwoods 2014. As far as I can tell, he is now 3-0 against the 4-time US Champion, all in classical time control games 11 years apart, with wins in 1992, 2003, and 2014.

perfidious: It has not all been sweetness and light for Jay when facing Shabalov (and I agree with those who see him as a nice guy):
