Samuel Lipschutz

SAMUEL LIPSCHUTZ (born Jul-04-1863, died Nov-30-1905, 42 years old) Hungary (federation/nationality United States of America) [what is this?] Samuel Lipschutz (Salomon Lipschütz, Solomon Lipschuetz) was born in Ungvár (Uzhhorod) and emigrated to the USA on September 4, 1880. He became a citizen on August 13, 1888. His name is recorded as "Salomon Lipschütz" on his naturalization papers (1), but the contemporary American press referred to him as "Samuel" (2)(3)(4) and he may have preferred this Anglicization. In his published articles and in tournament tables, however, only the initial "S." is used. This was probably to avoid confusion. His last name also varies, published as Lipschütz, Lipschutz or Lipschuetz. Lipschutz played in two international tournaments, 2nd BCA Congress, London (1886), finishing 6th, and 6th American Chess Congress, New York (1889), again finishing 6th. In matches he played George Henry Mackenzie in 1886 losing (+3, =5, -5), Jackson Whipps Showalter in 1892 winning the US Championship (+7, =7, -1) in the process. Three years later in 1895 Showalter regained the title (+7, =3, -4). In the 1900 Manhattan Chess Club Championship he was 1st ahead of both Frank Marshall and Showalter and this was probably his best result. Suffering from a disease of the lungs he went to Hamburg for treatment but died after an operation. His death certificate states his name as Salomon Lipschütz. Then lost it to Showalter in 1890. Got it back in the 1892 match, but retired undefeated and moved west. Showalter took the title back. Then in 1895, with Showalter as sitting champion, Lipschutz returned, challenged, and lost. The Manhattan Club (supporting Lipschütz) was apparently claiming the cup because the Secretary of the NYCA had mistakenly said that the first win would decide the match, while the Staten Island Club wanted to go by the written agreement, in which there must be two games played to equalize the colors. Not surprisingly, Lipschütz had received White first. At least, this is the version in the New York Times, August 18, 1897.
