IVAN CHEPARINOV
(born Nov-26-1986, 38 years old) Bulgaria

[what is this?]

Grandmaster and FIDE Senior Trainer. Ivan Cheparinov was born in Asenovgrad in 1986. He learned to play chess at age five, and progressed quickly enough to win the junior championship of Bulgaria in 2000. He then took the overall Bulgarian championship in 2004, the same year he became a grandmaster. He went on to win the Bulgarian championship in 2005, 2012 and 2018.

Since then, Cheparinov has put together some notable tournament successes, including joint second at Pamplona 2005 and clear first at the 2006 Essent Open. He took part in the World Cup (2005), eliminating Alexei Fedorov and Vassily Ivanchuk before losing his third-round match with Magnus Carlsen in quick-play tie-break. He advanced to the quarterfinals in the 2007 World Cup, winning against Wang Yue and Shakhriyar Mamedyarov, among others, before again being knocked out by Carlsen. Nonetheless, his accomplishments raised his rating enough to qualify him as a participant in the inaugural FIDE Grand Prix series. In 2012, he came =1st (2nd on tiebreak) at the Albena Open (2012) held in Bulgaria, with a score of 7/9 and clear 1st in the Varna Open with 6.5/9. In March 2013, he scored 6.5/9 at the Karpos Open, a half point from the lead. In August 2013, he scored 8/10 to place =2nd at the Politiken Cup (2013). In February 2014, he won the Tradewise Gibraltar (2014) in a blitz tiebreaker ahead of co-leaders Vassily Ivanchuk and Nikita Vitiugov.

Cheparinov qualified via his result at the European Individual Championship (2014) (=9th with 7.5/11) for the World Cup (2015), where he was knocked out of the contest upon a first round loss to former World Junior Champion Alexander Ipatov.

Cheparinov, the Bulgarian number 2, is also well-known for his role as a second to former FIDE World Champion and Bulgarian number 1 Veselin Topalov. He is credited with finding several of the opening novelties unleashed by his countryman during the 2000s, for example the move 12. Nxf7 in Topalov vs Kramnik, 2008.

World Cup (2009)/Ivan Cheparinov

Mar-02-10  percyblakeney: Cheparinov has dropped quite a bit on the rating lists lately. In January 2008 he was in the top 20, ahead of Grischuk. Now he's down to 75th with the same Elo as Beliavsky.
Mar-02-10  tud: He works hard behind the curtains. Isn't it mister Topalov ?
Jun-20-10  smaragdus: Cheparinov won IV Ruy Lopez Magistral with +5, =2, -0, a point and a half in front Caruana and Malakhov.

Penguincw: Cheparinov downed Robert Lee Hess (I Cheparinov vs R Hess, 2012) with white today to stay a perfect 5/5 at the Reykjavik Open (2012).

Normally, this would give him solo lead, however Ivan Sokolov also won his game today to stay perfect.

Tomorrow, the two "Ivan"s face off. Only one (or none) can stay perfect.

Jun-03-12  twinlark: Congratulations to GM Cheparinov for his result at the Albena Masters.

How history repeats itself: in the current Politiken Cup (2012), Chepa starts out again with 5/5, but without solo lead, as Jonny Hector also has 5/5. These two combative players meet in rd 6. But had Hector lost his round 5 game against Ivan Sokolov instead of winning it, we'd have had the same situation as in Reykjavik...

A host of players including Vladimir Malakhov, Jacob Aagaard, Robert Markus, Alexey Dreev and Erwin L'Ami among others are on 4½.

Aug-05-12  SimonWebbsTiger: congrats to Ivan who won this year's Politiken Cup (on tie break).

Penguincw: I know this is kinda late, but congratulations to Ivan Cheparinov for winning the Tradewise Gibraltar (2014) tournament, where he edged out Vassily Ivanchuk and Nikita Vitiugov on tiebreaks. He did not face either of those players, but it would've been interesting if he did. He also edged out 7 players by half a point, and 16 more by a full point.

Cheparinov scored +6 (+6,-0,=4) in the tournament, which got him 6 rating points, bumping his rating from 2672 to 2678. He now moves within 22 points of the "2700 club", somewhere he hasn't been since May of 2013, when he hit exactly 2700.

Jun-09-14  waustad: With his 9th round win over Vladimir Akopian he's some winner of the Albena Grand Europe cup. http://chess-results.com/tnr124016....
Nov-26-14  Mr. V: Cheparinov reminds me of Efim Geller in his agressive play and his role as a creative opening theorist.
