Check It Out: You say Carlsen, I say Carlsson

Congratulations on player of the day!

Sep-05-12  sagahelten: Today, Pontus Carlsson lost to an unrated player from Nigeria, Adeyinka Adesina (Olympiad, 8th round). I guess that doesn't happen too often. 26... dxe3 seems to have started the troubles... 27... Nf5 only made it worse...

  chancho: From Wiki:
<When Carlsson was one year old, his entire family died in tragic circumstances. He was subsequently adopted by a Swedish couple and it was his stepfather, Ingvar Carlsson (former president of Swedish chess federation),[2] who taught the game of chess to him when he was 4.[1] He studied Spanish during the time he was based in Spain, playing in the chess league.[1] Now he is fluent in Spanish (having earned a certificate) as well as Swedish, English, German and French. Carlsson also plans to learn Russian, since there is good chess literature that is only published in that language. He is a dual citizen of Sweden and Colombia, and is a hip-hop fan>

Penguincw: Happy 31st birthday Pontus Carlsson.
Dec-18-13  JustAnotherPatzer: STILL only two Negro GMs? WOW! I wonder why? How thoroughly baffling!
Dec-18-13  Alien Math: <Dec-18-13 JustAnotherPatzer: STILL only two Negro GMs? WOW! I wonder why? How thoroughly baffling!> http://www.chess.com/forum/view/gen...
Dec-18-13  Interbond: I wonder why there is only one IM in Japan? IM Domingos Ramos 2254 is actually from the Philippines, but now a japanese citizen. Japan has population of 127.6 mill(2012) and only IM Ramos, compared to Iceland with a population of 320.137(2007) and 12 GM's. Maybe you JustAnotherPatzer have the answer?
Dec-18-13  jakaiden: <JustAnotherPatzer: STILL only two Negro GMs? WOW! I wonder why? How thoroughly baffling!> The term is Black not Negro FYI!
Dec-18-13  JustAnotherPatzer: But 'Negro' or 'Negroid' derives from the Latin 'niger', <meaning> 'black', so why are you, <jakaiden> bossily seeking to police the use of my descriptive preference? The term is widely used in academic literature, (forensic anthropology for e.g.).

<interbond> You're not comparing like with like! In Japan they play Shogi, not chess! So, given that China has embraced chess in recent years, surely the number of Chinese GMs to have emerged would be a much more fitting comparison to the numbers produced by the diffuse Negro population than Japan, wouldn't you agree?

<Maybe you JustAnotherPatzer have the answer?>

Whatever gave you that impression <interbond>? Did i not <wonder why?> and consider it <thoroughly baffling>? I doubt i could've any clearer in soliciting an answer, rather than seeking to furnish one.

Dec-19-13  jakaiden: You read too many books man. Call a Black man negro to his face and you will get your ass whipped.
Dec-19-13  JustAnotherPatzer: <jakaiden> Firstly, you can't read <too many> books.

Secondly, you seem to be suggesting that all Negroes are overly sensitive /emotive and violent?

If race wasn't merely a social construct i'd say that was very racist of you and according to the posting guidelines (since no one's told CG that if race doesn't exist nor does racism) it's enough to have you censured /censored.

Thirdly, i'd call him by his name.

Funny how a neutral term designating a racial group can trigger your PC programming and derail a perfectly legitimate debate as to why there are only two Negro GMs in the world. ('Black' if you prefer, it makes no difference to my point. Notwithstanding my earlier tongue-in-cheek aside, the reason i don't use the term 'black' is b/c it implies that racial differences are only skin deep when, demonstrably, they go far beyond that).

Dec-19-13  RedShield: When is this racist going to be banned?
Dec-19-13  JustAnotherPatzer: <Redshield> Here! Here! Let's ban <jakaiden> for his shockingly racist slur!

Good boy <Redshield>, gold star and a pat on the head for you lol

Dec-19-13  RedShield: Naturally, I accept your plaudit, but feel constrained to point out that it's actually <Hear, hear!>.

<Originated in the British parliament in the 18th century as a contraction of 'hear him, hear him'>

I would be interested in learning what other demonstrable racial differences you have in mind.

Dec-19-13  JustAnotherPatzer: Wait a minute <Redshield>, you're encouraging CG to ban me on the grounds that i'm a racist; wish to silence my voice forever on this site, seek to censor the debate altogether, yet in the meantime you're legitimising it by asking a question of me that would further the very debate you seek to censor?

What did i say that you construed as racist and deserving of Stalinist like censorship? Could it be that just as i mistook 'hear' for 'here' you've confused 'racial' for 'racist'? Or else, i repeat, what do you so militantly object to that you would silence my voice here forever? And by answering my question are you not tacitly acknowledging that this innocent debate (Why are there STILL only two Negro GMs?) with a non-person (to your way of thinking) is legitimate?

Dec-19-13  RedShield: You sure ask a lot of questions. But I fear you labour under a misapprehension. I seek not your banning, but enlightenment about your views, per my request.
Dec-19-13  JustAnotherPatzer: <RedShield: When is this racist going to be banned?>

But was that not intended for me?

Dec-19-13  Absentee: <JustAnotherPatzer: If race wasn't merely a social construct i'd say that was very racist of you and according to the posting guidelines>

It isn't. It's just an unpopular term for genotypical and phenotypical differentiation.

Dec-19-13  RedShield: It was intended for you, yes, but it was about me.
Dec-19-13  JustAnotherPatzer: <Absentee> ABSOLUTELY! As i went on to say i was being tongue-in-cheek.

<Redshield> You've confused me now lol. I have to do some chores but i'll cite some of those demonstrable differences tomorrow or the day after. Kind regards.

Dec-19-13  Eduardo Bermudez: I would like to see Pontus playing for colombian chess team !!
Dec-19-13  Appaz: Don't expect any answers, <JustAnotherPatzer>, you are in a mine field.

Maybe it is easier to try to debate why Jews are are massively overrepresented among the male World Champions?

Is it because of biological, cultural, religious or national/political factors?

I would go for a mix of the first two, even if that would label me a racist among some people.

For the record, I'm not a Jew, according to any of the above four factors.

Dec-19-13  valiant: But Carlsson and Carlsen are, because they are good chessplayers?
