[what is this?]

Ragger was awarded the Grandmaster title in 2008. He won the Austrian Chess Championship in 2008, 2009 and 2010 and has played the first board for Austria in the Chess Olympiads since 2008. In 2004, he was the European Under-16 Chess Champion and in 2011 he won with ZSK Maribor in the Slovenian league, and the Bosnian League with Bosna Sarajevo, while in the German Bundesliga his SG Solingen team finished third in the 2011/12 season.

He came =5th (6th on tiebreak) in the European Championship (2011), which qualified him for the World Cup (2011), where he faced Russian GM Evgeny Alekseev he drew the two classical games but lost one and drew one of the rapid game tiebreakers to exit the contest. He won the Vienna Open 2012 ahead of Kiril Georgiev. His strong 7.5/11 result in the European Championship (2013) qualified him for a place in the World Cup (2013), where he defeated Russian GM Ivan Popov in the first round tiebreaker, to progress to the second round where he lost to Nikita Vitiugov. Won the Politiken Cup (2015) with 8/10 on tiebreak after a ten-way tie for first. In August 2015 in Vienna, he lost a match to Shakhriyar Mamedyarov by 2.5-3.5. He is also a FIDE Trainer (2015).

Nov-06-14  waustad: He'll be doing commentary for the games from the Carlsen v Anand match at: http://derstandard.at/. His commentary will come out after the game has ended.
Nov-09-14  waustad: He's also commentating live at Haus des Schachsport in Wien. It would be easier to do something like that in Europe where times make more sense than in North America.
Nov-20-14  waustad: This is a busy weekend for Ragger. He is a member of at least 2 teams playing at the same time in the Steirische Landesliga 2014/2015 and Bundesliga 1 respectively and also doing commentary for the WCC. Since he played in round 1 for Schachclub MPÖ Maria Saal in the Bundesliga 1 I suspect that he'll be doing that and some after the fact commentary on Carlsen vs Anand. In his first round game he beat GM Andrei Maksimenko in an endgame arising from a Sicilian Najdorf.

Many of the top players for teams in the Steirische Landesliga are in similar situations, so many players in that league will be playing on higher boards than usual this weekend.

As usual, chess-results.com has lots of information about Austrian events.

Feb-02-15  waustad: I guess they haven't got the last weekends games from the Bundesliga posted yet. Ragger annotates his draw against Volokitin here (in German): http://www.markusragger.at/chess/in...
Feb-05-15  waustad: Happy birthday to the Austrian #1. Good luck at the hometown tournament, the Graz Schachopen starting soon.

Penguincw: I second that. Happy 27th birthday to Austrian #1, Markus Ragger.
Feb-05-15  swordfish: Happy birthday, GM Ragger. Isn't he prominent enough to deserve a photo?
Feb-05-15  Shams: <swordfish> Sure. If you find one in the public domain email it to the admins and they'll put it up.

Penguincw: Wikipedia has one, does that count?

Feb-21-15  waustad: He came in with 7/9 in Graz, which put him 1/2 behind the winner Bartosz Socko, in 3rd place on tiebreaks. Here is a nice attack from round 8, with German commentary: http://www.viewchess.com/cbreader/2...

Penguincw: Congrats to 2nd seed Markus Ragger for taking silver at the Zalakaros Open. He started off with 3 straight wins, but only won one more, as he finished with a solid 6.5/9 (tied for the best undefeated score). He does gain 8 rating points, as he is now at 2676 and 63rd place (the latter is a career high).
Jun-16-15  waustad: With an excellent result in the French Team Championships he is closing in on 2700. He is now over 2690 on the live rating list.
Jun-18-15  waustad: With 3.5/4 so far at the Mitropa Cup he is continuing his form from the French league. If he wins tomorrow he'll be over 2700 live for the first time.
Aug-02-15  waustad: If I read the official site correctly, Ragger won the Politiken tourney this year on tiebreaks. That site also indicated that he is now at 2696 elo. He was very close to 2700 live rating during Mitropa but a loss sidetracked that attempt. Hopefully he'll soon join the club. One caveat is that I don't speak Danish, but it seemed pretty straightforward.

Well guessed! Quite correct what you discerned and wrote below.

Penguincw: Markus Ragger wins the Politiken Cup on tiebreaks with a score of 8/10 (+6,-0,=4)! He finishes ahead of <9> other players on tiebreaks, with 9 <others> just half a point back.
Aug-16-15  waustad: He'll be playing a short match with Mamedyarov starting tomorrow in Vienna. This is a part of a huge chess festival at the Wiener Rathaus. There are over 460 participants in the A section of the tournament alone, which began yesterday. Many of the Austrians playing are doing quite well, though with any huge Swiss there are a lot of mismatches in early rounds.
Sep-19-15  waustad: He started the German Bundesliga season today with a win against Tigran Gharamian (2660). If that doesn't take him over 2700 live, it is very close.
Sep-19-15  waustad: They just posted his live rating on 2700chess and it is 2699.5. Tomorrow he should be white against Andrey Vovk (2611).
Oct-18-15  waustad: Will this game finally get him over 2700? He was listed at 2698 and won today over Dimitar Ilievski (2309) in the European Club Cup. They only seem to be broadcasting the top 8 tables and SC MPA - MARIA SAAL (AUT) will probably have to win twice to get a table that high.
Nov-07-15  waustad: SC MPÖ Maria Saal is at it again in the Austrian Bundesliga. In the third round today, they met Schachklub Sparkasse Jenbach in a clash of two favorites. Maria Saal triumphed, going 5-1, including GM Ragger's win over GM Volokitin.
Jan-11-16  waustad: There is a lengthy interview with him here (in German): http://www.schach-welt.de/BLOG/blog...

ketchuplover: doing well at gibraltar so far
Jan-31-16  waustad: I remember in a social media chat mentioning this tournament to an Austrian 2100+ player and he'd never heard of it. That won't be the case anymore. Ragger's results are big news at: http://www.chess.at/ right now.
Feb-05-16  waustad: Happy b'day! The results were good at Gibraltar, but the missed win in the penultimate round (if the comps are to be believed) took off a little of the luster. I sincerely hope he gets to 2700 soon. He's been so close several time.
