Mar-25-08 | | PhilFeeley: Kevin took second in the San Sebastian Opening this year. He was close to the win the whole time, and this curious game could have lost it completely. It's listed as a win for white, but black has mate in 4 in the final position! [Event "31st San Sebastian Open"]

Final position:
click for larger viewOn move 46 Kevin could have won the black bishop, as the queen cannot get back in time to defend. 45...Kh7 is a mistake. But 47. e6 allows mate in 4 by black. I'd like to know the explanation behind this one. It doesn't seem to be a time trouble problem, but I have no way of knowing. |

Qb5+ 1-0 Kevin had a nicely centralized Bishop and knight, and started a kingside attack with black's heavy pieces on the opposite side trying to break through there (without success). Black then tried to get his king over to the other side (slowly) and ran into Kevin's counter-attack on the queenside. The final error 59...Re8 allowed 60 Bxg6. Black could have resigned then, but fought on for 15 more moves. Kevin's only checks came at the very end. I liked how there were no pawn exchanges until move 39! Most (75%) of the pieces were still on the board by time control and black made Kevin work for the win. The black fortress was tough to break even though he was down the exchange by move 46. Congrats to Kevin! Tomorrow should be even tougher! But at least he shares the lead now and has a good chance to win it all. |

<PhilFeeley> It's difficult to keep up with all the tournaments going on in Europe, but if you want to see Kevin's most recent (I think?)tournament, the Boris Kostic Memorial, try: http://chess.vrsac.com/Aktuelno/Mem... . You can view all his games from this event here, as well as many photos. Unfortunately, Kevin went +0-2=7 in Vrsac. |

Sep-24-11 | | wordfunph: amusing story taken from NIC mag 2006 #02..
"And finally I should mention that for those who simply wanted to relax after a long day and fraternize, there was always the very congenial atmosphere of the spacious Caleta bar! I remember one such evening analysing a chess position with some fellow participants, when a very polite and dignified looking woman approached our table and asked for our autographs.
We quickly signed her tournament booklet, the woman graciously thanked us and then wandered off. As we were about to get back to the position we were looking at, Peter Wells said to us: 'Do you know who that woman is? She is Nigel Short's mother!' I almost fell off my chair." - GM Kevin Spraggett (during Gibraltar 2006) |
