I hope he does an impression of his nemesis, Levon Aronian!

Aug-12-13  Paint My Dragon: Thanks for posting Natalia; I will visit your site more often if Mr Gormally is a regular contributor! Not sure why he didn't give Mickey Adams a mention at the World Cup though. Jones will undoubtedly enjoy the experience, but Adams could potentially win it!

Natalia Pogonina: <Paint My Dragon> Thanks! He is; check out Danny's new columns every week, usually on Monday. Today's one is about why the Russians are so good at chess:

keypusher: <It's only in recent years that Ukraine have started to challenge that, and while Armenia has cleaned up in the last few Olympiads, they have nothing like the strength in depth of Russia, and it should also be pointed out that both Ukraine and Armenia are former Soviet-bloc countries.>

Actually, Danny, they are former republics in the USSR. Hungary and Poland are former Soviet-bloc countries.

Sep-30-13  Paint My Dragon: Loving Danny's articles on Natalia's site. His sentiments range from self-doubt to poor form, from disenchantment with tournament conditions to a feeling of being lost with nowhere to turn. The outlook couldn't be much bleaker - and that's probably not untypical of life as a chess pro at the lower levels.

I shouldn't laugh ... indeed, its hard not to engage in a bit of schadenfreude ... but he informs us he has no friends, no girlfriend, wants to get out of chess and is becoming an angry nutcase - then you skip down the page slightly and there's an invitation to have Danny as your coach. Priceless!

Actually, I think his articles are a refreshing change from the usual and I look forward to each new episode! Keep up the good work Dan! And remember Alnwick was not long ago voted the best place to live in Britain!

Sep-30-13  dehanne: At the very least it should make one feel better about one's own life, unless one is even further down the deep end.
Nov-02-13  Paint My Dragon: A big welcome to GM Gormally, now active on cg.com!
Nov-06-13  waustad: Let's hope he doesn't just do something like the "Little Peasant" who found it fun for a few days and hasn't been back. Here is a plea COME BACK ALEJANDRO.

offramp: Judge: Please state your name.
A: Danny Gormally.
Judge:Is this the way you always behave?
A: Not normally.
Judge: My verdict is that you will be arraigned.
A: What? Formally?
Apr-11-14  RedShield: The prosecution demanded a tough sentence for Gormally, so the judge ordered him to 'Leave Lev Aronian alone!'
May-23-14  independentthinker: I'm really looking forward to Danny Gormally's new book MATING THE CASTLED KING. It's a shame this forum is full of so many jokes about the Aronian incident. Whilst that was amusing, that was years ago and I'm looking forward to seeing his efforts in this book. The preview on the Quality Chess website is awesome.

offramp: Has anyone read that book, CASTLING THE MATED KING?

Although I am a big fan of Nigel Short, for his humour, and John Nunn for his high intelligence and Jon Speelman for his Talmudic look and depth, it is Gormally who is my favourite British Grandmaster.

Both of us are from that much-maligned and daemonized race the London-Irish. We are unlucky enough to be paddies but not physically born in Ireland, so we are known to Irish-Irish as (gah!) Plastic Paddies.

For those of you that don't know, my full name is Alan O'Brien. One of my middle names is Larkin. LET THOSE WHO HAVE THE KNOWLEDGE UNDERSTAND THOSE THREE NAMES.

The upshot is, if you've read this far you can call me Al.

offramp: <Check It Out>, that's right. I was named for three Irish Republican Martyrs. To another Irishman the names would be instantly obvious, but to anyone else the names would seem innocuous.
