GrahamClayton: The shortest surname in the chessgames database?
Feb-04-11
Premium Chessgames Member
Phony Benoni: There's always Mr. L. And, for that matter, what is the surname of NN ?

You could also argue for a tie between Alexander Blank, Wolfgang Blank, Bodo Blank, and Ralf Blank.

It is well known that the longest surname belongs to Anthony Miles, unless someone uncovers a game by Buzz Lightyear.

GrahamClayton: Here are another couple of 2-letter surnames in the database:

Moulthun Ly

Wang Li

Phony Benoni: Looking at any list of Chinese names will give you plenty of examples. For instance,

Li Bo

Yuhua Xu

Guo Yu

However, I believe (and I hope someone will correct me if I'm wrong) in Chinese names the surname comes first. If that's true, there will be many other examples out there; lots of Xu's and Wu's and Ye's around.

Oh, I suppose we must bring up that Wascally Wabbit, Jimmy Yu.

You know:

Now if the challenge is to find non-Chinese two letter surnames... well, that's not so easy.

perfidious: <Phony Benoni> Used to work with a guy called Ba Ta; while he was Oriental, don't believe he was Chinese. Never mattered anyway, as he was a good man, always with a pleasant, helpful attitude.

WannaBe: According to Wiki, Ta is a surname in Vietnamese, but also a Chinese character meaning field, as such, rice wheat or grain.

I know a few Vietnamese, whose (grand) parents were originally Chinese, but moved for better business opportunities, or what nots...

Mar-01-22  Nosnibor: Ek obtained an I.M. norm at Eskjo 1973 when he finished first equal with Akvist on 6/9. There followed four I.M.`s Soos, Schmidt and Hecht on 5.5/9 and Czerniak on 4.5/9. Robert Bellin from England finished on 3.5/9 drawing with the top six players.
