GrahamClayton: Is this the same Peter Gilruth who is now living in Kenya, and who won the Kenyan championship in 2007?

Phony Benoni: It's probably the same person. I remember a Peter Gilruth from Illinois, who played in a couple of Michigan tournaments in the 1980s-90s with a rating of around 2300. Don't recognize the guy in the picture, but I'm very bad with faces. Maybe some of our Illinois Veterans know for sure. (<FSR>, do you hear me?>

FSR: Back in the 70s, I read of Peter Gilruth, and played over some of his games from the Illinois Chess Bulletin. Unfortunately, however, I never met the man, so I can't tell you what he looked/looks like.
Apr-17-21  jmelton: This is the same Peter Gilruth. He went to Duke with me (he was a grad student when I was undergrad) in the early '80s. We went to the intercollegiate championship in 1982, and performed far beyond our seeding thanks largely to him on 1st board. He beat a couple of 2500 players.
Apr-17-21  Granny O Doul: Peter Gilruth played at the Hillside Chess Club outside Chicago in the late 70's but soon went off somewhere with the Peace Corps. I met him in New York in probably the late 90's. He seems to get around.

perfidious: Also recall seeing Gilruth on occasion in the 1980s and 1990s.

monopole2313: Peter also played for the Arizona team that won the rec.games.chess college tournament back in 1990 or 1991. I believe he got a Ph.D. in Watershed Management. With a pair of senior masters and a couple of masters and experts, Arizona would have done well at Pan-Am that year had they participated.
