perfidious: One of the good guys in New England chess, whom it was a pleasure to see during the 1980s at most major events in the region.

perfidious: My first recollections of Ed were from the 1976 New York State championship, then some weeks later at the Hartford Open; believe he tied for first in Hartford, which was a tough event. Ed's style was unpretentious, but possessed of a certain tenacity; overall, he was content to play solidly as White and was more of a counterpuncher with Black.

We would only meet at the board for the first time at the 1983 New England Open; I had a winning attack, but let slip and he hung on for the win. Our last encounter was in the 1994 Vermont championship, an English in which he never got any advantage in the opening or the middlegame. The two between these were both wins for me.

Always enjoyed talking with Ed at events back in the 1980s; he was one of the people I could have spent time with outside a tournament and felt at ease.
