By the way, Rev. DeSoyres, who ministered in Saint John, New Brunswick, Canada, escaped an asassination atempt there.
May-06-14  ljfyffe: In DeSoyres - Pollock, Montreal, 1895, the reverend sacrificed his Q on move 24, and went on to lose in38, but Canadian master Jonathan MacDonald has shown he wins in all variations with correct play. MacDonald owns the DeSoyres Cup, donated by the reverend in1888 to the Saint John Chess Club . The analysis in the St. John Globe errs.
May-09-14  ljfyffe: As well as Harding on Oxford-Cambridge, see Stephen Mann's Yorkshire Chess History re Desoyres.

May-09-14  ljfyffe: Re Harding's article-"When a Canadian amateur(DeSoyres) has to go far afield as Holland for a little tournament practice, it seems to us that some action is necessary" CHECKMATE, 1903. Quoted in Last of the Nineteenth Chess Champions of Saint John, ENPASSANT, NO. 144. 1997, by Larry J. Fyffe. I.e. it was indeed the same John DeSoyres.
May-09-14  ljfyffe: That sould be "so far afield"

Jun-06-14  ljfyffe: History of chess buffs who visit Saint John will find a photo of DeSoyres and a stained-glass widow dedicated to him at the Anglican (Stone) church in the uptown; he's buried in a cemetary in the eastern part of the City. Saint John was incorporated in 1785 after the arrival of the loyal Americans who did not feel welcome in the US after the cival war between them and the Americans who gained independence from the Crown. Benedict Arnold, who had renounced his betrayal of the Crown, lived in Saint John for a time. Known as the Loyalist City, another chessplayer of note who lived in Saint John was James Narraway.

Black: N on c3, K on g4, P'd on f5 and h5. Of some replies, Melt was to say " this is not what is demanded; I repeat: White forces Black to mate(the White King) in five moves(The Mercury, Feb. 17, 1842).
Jun-08-14  ljfyffe: White to mate in how many moves? Problem posted by chess club in Montreal (Gazette, Dec 10, 1836): White: K on c1, N on d2; Black: K on a1, P on a3. An "amateur" sent in the correct solution, a six-mover.
