perfidious: This was a bit of a surprise, though I had not had contact with John since the late 1980s.

My earliest recollection of John was as what seemed an impossibly strong player in 1972-73, when I was taking my first steps in tournament play. Believe he was already ~2100 then and hailed from Connecticut.

John and I met nine times at the board, from 1982 to 1987, with a score of +3 -3 =3 in those games. The player with White fared less well in our matchups; I remember John winning in a Tarrasch French to book his one full point with that colour, while I notched my lone win, in an English, in one of our early meetings.

John was always quiet but pleasant at the board and played a fairly solid game as White, with more of a classical repertoire as Black.

RIP to another of the decent people whom I knew in my playing days in Boston.
