ANDREI VOLOKITIN
(born Jun-18-1986, 38 years old) Ukraine
PRONUNCIATION:
[what is this?]
Andrei Aleksandrovich Volokitin was born in Lviv. He was world under-12 champion in 1998 and achieved the grandmaster title in 2001, soon after he turned 15 years of age. In 2004 he broke into the top 100 on the FIDE world ranking list, then won the 73rd Ukrainian Championship (2004). That October he helped lead his country to the gold medal at the 36th Olympiad (2004) with a 2771 performance rating on second board. On the January 2005 rating list he was ranked the top junior, and 20th overall. His rating slipped back slightly during the first half of 2005, but in July he recovered his form and tied for first at the 38th Biel Chess Festival (2005) with Boris Gelfand. He won the Donostia Chess Festival (2011) in San Sebastian, defeating Viktor Laznicka in the final. He placed =2nd (13th on tiebreak) in the 13th European Individual Championship (2012), scoring 8/11, qualifying for the World Cup 2013 and enabling him to break the 2700 rating barrier for the first time. In August, he scored 7/11 to place equal second (3rd on tiebreak) behind Anton Korobov in the Ukrainian Championship (2012). He represented Ukraine in the Chess Olympiad (2012) on board 3, scoring 6/9.

A strong result (8/11) in the 13th European Individual Championship (2012) qualified him to play in the World Cup (2013), where in a shock result he was eliminated from the event when he lost 0-2 to US teenage GM Ray Robson. A 7.5/11 result at the European Individual Championship (2015) placed Volokitin within the group that qualified for the World Cup (2015), where he was eliminated in the first round by Ukrainian-American GM Alexander Onischuk.

According to the database, Volokitin's record against Magnus Carlsen in classical games stands at 4 wins and 2 draws for the six games they played between 2004 and 2008.

ketchuplover: Happy 30th birthday to Andrei
Jun-18-16  FairyPromotion: Happy Birthday to GM Volokitin!

I wish him a renaissance in his career, as he is indeed one of the most interesting players out there. I still remember the A Volokitin vs Mamedyarov, 2012 game, which I was following live, and I was left in awe as the game unfolded. Even as a huge Mamedyarov fan, that games remains as one of my all time favorites, and deserves the title of "Volokitin's Immortal" one day. He also has many brilliant games to follow it. Here are some of my favorite games of his that are not among his notable games (at the moment):

A Volokitin vs E Inarkiev, 2008
P Kotsur vs A Volokitin, 2011
Ponomariov vs A Volokitin, 2012

Jun-18-16  Virgil A: Happy Birthday!
Jun-18-16  diagonal: Happy 30th birthday to GM Andrei Volokitin.

He achieved the grandmaster title fifteen years ago at age of fifteen in 2001. I first saw him as relative 'newcomer' on the international chess circuit at Biel GM in 2005 - and Volokitin won together with Gelfand (both even equal on tie-break), nowadays he is a player who somehow did not fully fulfill his early promises, in the strong crowd of 2600-something ELO's but below the notorious 2700-barrier and thus rarely having a chance for further good invitations.

When is his next otb Meeting with Magnus? http://www.chessgames.com/perl/ches...

Jun-28-16  diagonal: Wow, Volokitin got an invitation and is playing in Bled at the traditional <Vidmar Memorial> (XX jubilee edition), ten players in a round robin, in an old style mix of five players from the hosting nation (including leading Slovenian grandmasters Lenic and Beliavsky) battling five international guest stars: top-seeded are Nisipeanu (ex-Roumania, now Germany) and Naiditsch (ex-Germany, now Azerbaijan):

http://www.vidmarjevmemorial.si/vel...

Andrei Volokitin is leading with 4.5/5

Jul-01-16  diagonal: Volokitin grinding out a win with black against Slovenian number one Luca Lenic today, tomorrow is rest day, with one round to go, Volokitin leads unbeaten now at 6.5/8, a full point ahead of Naiditsch at 5.5, followed by Nisipeanu at 5.0. Senior Beliavsky is at 50%, Kozul has a bad tournament.

On sunday, Andrei Volokitin needs only a draw with white against Jure Borisek to win the XX jubilee Vidmar Memorial as clear first!

Penguincw: Congrats to Andrei Volokitin for winning the Vidmar Memorial with a score of 7/9, half a point ahead of Naiditsch.
Jul-03-16  diagonal: Relaunch of a career?

<Ukrainian Champion in 2004> and member of Ukraine which won the team gold medal at the 2004 Olympiad. On the January 2005 rating list, Volokitin was ranked the top junior of the world, and 20th overall (at ELO 2685; yes, there were less than twenty players above 2700 that time).

Volokitin won the prestigious <Biel GM Invitation 2005> (joint with Gelfand on same tie-break scoring, declared ex-aequo winners by the organizers; yes, there was no play-off that time), beating the same year Jan Timman in a rapid friendly match 2½-1½ at Léon.

During some years, Volokitin's ranking slipped back slightly, competition is tough at high level, and if your life is going into its mid-twenties, you will no longer take benefit from youth mania by the mass-media and organizers.

<Ukrainian Champion in 2015> for a second time, and today, he won the <Jubilee XX Vidmar Memorial in Bled 2016> as clear first.

Congratulation, GM Andrei Volokitin!

Jul-07-16  diagonal: Photo album, some really nice pics from the earlier years, with Carlsen as well as Karjakin, or Gelfand (from Biel 2005), Radjabov, Pono, Kasim, Naka, Chucky and mighty Vic: http://www.grandcoach.com/en/studen...
Sep-13-16  Conrad93: 30 point rating gain, and the second best performance by any player in the Olympiad. He's jumped 46 places in just one event!
Sep-13-16  fisayo123: Yeah, brilliant performance from Volokitin. I see <conrad93> is still a fan :) <8.5/9> and <3003> RP. Only Wei Yi drew with him.
Sep-14-16  Conrad93: <Yeah, brilliant performance from Volokitin. I see <conrad93> is still a fan :) <8.5/9> and <3003> RP. Only Wei Yi drew with him.>

Volokitin is super underrated.

Sep-14-16  fisayo123: <Conrad93> Yeah, he is somewhat. Many of the Ukrainian 2630-2700 GM's are.
Sep-15-16  diagonal: The chess scene is very crowded these days, indeed.

An up-grade @ <second best performance by any player>:

Volokitin is <the best individual player at the Chess Olympiad in Baku 2016> in the open event (and overall, of course; Gunina as best woman).

Congratulation! Time to schedule Andrei now again in an invitation tournament with Magnus.

Sep-19-16  Conrad93: I though Baadur Jobava was.
Sep-19-16  FairyPromotion: Jobava gained more raiting points, but because he played 1 game more. Performance wise Volokitin was #1.
Sep-24-16  yesnomaybeidontknow: Congratulations to Andrei on his fantastic performance at the Chess Olympiad 2016: 8 wins, 1 draw from 9 games!
Oct-12-19  Pulo y Gata: Time for an upset Volok!
Jun-19-20  Scuvy: Happy Birthday to one of my favorite modern day players! Volokitin is relentlessly aggressive: his wins over Nakamura (Qh5 attack), Carlsen (The first one) and Mamedyarov (Sicilian Najdorf) are impressive.
Jun-19-20  Scuvy: *belated birthday
