CHESSGAMES - BEER

[what is this?]

Beer is believed to be over 10,000 years old. Although no one knows its exact origins, some agricultural historians believe that the first beer may have been produced accidentally when a stash of grain was soaked by rain and then warmed by the sun. If this mixture were spontaneously fermented by wild, airborne yeast—which thrives in just these warm, moist conditions—beer would have been produced (Encarta).

Fermented beverages have been preferred over water throughout the ages: they are safer, provide psychotropic effects, and are more nutritious. Some have even said alcohol was the primary agent for the development of Western civilization, since more healthy individuals (even if inebriated much of the time) lived longer and had greater reproductive success.   keypusher: <whiskeyrebel> Have you tried the Belgian beers, esp. Chimay? More alcohol. Give your body what it's thirsty for! Mind you, I have nothing against the corporate brews either.
Oct-19-06  whiskeyrebel: I know several Belgian beer fanatics. I was under the impression it was all dark. I wish I liked dark beer. The more things you enjoy in this life the better. I'd like to visit Ireland someday, but I can't even fake enjoying Guiness and I wouldn't want to offend a pub full of Irish folk. Come to think of it, I can always drink whiskey in Ireland and be very, very happy doing so. I am thee Whiskey Rebel after all..and I live up to the name ( after my chess studies for the day are over of course ).
Oct-19-06  ughaibu: Whiskeyrebel: Belgium produces hundreds of beers, strong light beers include Duval and triple trappistes.
Oct-19-06  whiskeyrebel: Ahhh...hundreds of beers, lovely Belgium. Thanks for the tip ughaibu, it's possible the big import store I visit in Austin stocks those. Do they drink more beer in Belgium than in Australia per capita?
Oct-19-06  babakova: Newcastle brown ale is a decent beer.
Oct-19-06  whiskeyrebel: so many beers, so few years...

I understand they also invented French fries, which together with the beer makes Belgium the greatest civilization in human history.

Oct-19-06  BipolarFanatic: <keypusher> Actually, there is a joke about Belgium's fame in the chips department. What is the location of the biggest chip shop in the world? Answer: on the French-Dutch border.
Oct-19-06  Akavall: <whiskeyrebel>
As long as your enjoy what you drink it's great. I just don't like the "it's nasty but it get's you drunk" attitude. There are so many beers to choose from one should be able to find something they like.

<Do they drink more beer in Belgium than in Australia per capita?>

No.

<st. peter's stout is some nasty @#$%...anything you can buy at the liquor store for $2 usually is though...>

You mentioned price, but not volume, so I am not sure what your "$2" means. In any case, you can't buy a bottle (1 pint) of St. Peter's stout here for $2. Maybe the prices are lower where you live, or maybe you just had something else.

There is always Harp lager :).

Oct-22-06  positionalbrilliancy: Is it weird to not like the taste of alcohol, at all?
Oct-22-06  ughaibu: Positionalbrilliancy: That's why cocktails were invented.
Oct-22-06  whiskeyrebel: I have plenty of friends who hate the taste or effects of alcohol.,..hey, more for me. Actually, the taste of many forms of alcohol isn't pleasant to me...a veteran drunk. Wine with dinner tastes the best, although I drink it probably the least. Straight whiskey without chaser annoys me most of the time. I see nothing wrong with drinks that have a sissy reputation like rum & cokes. One of the healthiest drinks out there is cranberry juice and vodka. That's my 2 cents worth.
Oct-23-06  schnarre: <whiskeyrebel> A good-tasting 2 cents!
Oct-26-06  whiskeyrebel: it really saddens me that my hobbies of drinking and chess don't mesh very well. I can feel the difference in my playing level on the internet after only 1 or 2 beers. I really admire players who fearlessly go to the board with a nice buzz from alcohol and play anyway. I feel like I'm wasting my time studying tactical exercises even if I've drank. That's my blues. On the other hand it's great fun to get hammered while watching others play. The pressure is off and it seems like I can assess positions comfortably. I'm drinking a shot of Jim Beam right now to those valiant boozers who are regularly play on-line drunk and laugh off blunders or lost rating points. Urp.
Oct-27-06  Archives: If you’re a man aged anywhere from 21 to 35, I’ve got some sobering news for you. Your Grandmother is a better drinker than you are.
Oct-27-06  Archives: My grandfather fought in a war once and then he came back home and got a job and made a few billion dollars. When I first found out my granddad used to have a job, I was so embarrassed I almost puked. When he was born, he was only worth a few million dollars. Do you have any idea how embarrassing it is to be related to someone like that? It’s disgusting.
Oct-27-06  Archives: Uh wait, is this a chess site?

Oops I thought I was writing my memoirs.

Ignore above post.

Oct-27-06  technical draw: I agree with you <Archives>. Poverty is so, so passé. Work? Jobs? My God, Salaries! I feel faint!
Oct-27-06  Archives: You see, I’m not a manly drinker. But I aspire to be one. I want to drink like my father drank. And like his father before him. I want to proudly shout my order to the bartender and see the nods of respect out of the corner of my eye. I want to trade my straw for a swizzle and my pink vodka slurry for something brown and congener-laced. But it won’t be easy....
Oct-27-06  babakova: Ill drink anything except rum, and that includes rum based drinks (bad memories from my first encounter with alcohol). However.... No matter what I have ordered in a bar, whiskey or a girly drink or whatever, I have never gotten a "nod of respect" - only looks that say "is that kid really allowed to drink?".
Oct-27-06  technical draw: "You can't get a nod of respect when you're puking in the ladies room"...Gloria Vanderbilt....
Oct-27-06  sandmanbrig: The only reason I say beer exists, is because of its hilarious commercials.
